It used to be like that: one short chapter every day, 200 chapters make a book. But with the current book it all went to hell - as he was trying to fit the events he planned for the book in 200 chapters he started to increase chapter size(up to fucking 16k words - compare to 300 words chapters from the first book), it started to take more than a day to write. It doesn't make sense. The world doesn't make sense. My little pony at least has (had) general sense of some internal consistency (not a lot of it, but enough). FoE does not. Post apocalyptic world shouldn't be crowded as a god damn lunapark. It should be more like The Road (book). Not to mention their entire universe is based upon a game series of 5 games and to make restrictions even worse they're basing it off of 6 seasons of MLP, a series where the comics provide more backstory than the series itself.
Now the last one is obviously implied for most fan content unless you decide to follow comic canon which really does improve the amount of things you can work with but for most other stories this isn't a problem since they're not trying to create another universe, they're staying in the vaguely defined one. One set of restrictions is bad enough to work with, let alone two sets.

I love how badass Twilight is though. Powerful Twilight is always a win. Quality of writing is still great, it's just the content itself hasn't age well to me.

The author wasn't quite sure what he wanted to do: focus on "ponies make war" (the original title) or focus on that dumb little "immortal game". Since he renamed it to the latter, obviously he rather that... but the beginning and even the middle of the story suffer as a result of uncertainty even after the rewrites.

Discord was also shoehorned in since he started it at the end of season one and his appearance clashed with his internal lore despite his attempts to integrate him. Minor nitpicks but it all adds up to me.

I just read http://www.fimfiction.net/story/332433/student-of-the-night today (ongoing), which I'm enjoying quite a bit.

Lots of minor spelling and grammar errors, and it can lean a bit on purple prose, but it does a great job teasing a bunch of mysteries, and feels very "planned", unlike many other AU fics which seem meandering after an interesting premise.

I didn't particularly care either way for the sexuality of the character. I actually thought it was shit pandering at first, until I found out the author was a woman. Then I figured it probably wasn't pandering.

I personally liked it for the way it wove fallout references seamlessly into the post apocalyptic pony world.

On a more serious note, Through the Well of Pirene is my favourite fanfic, so much so that I bought a physical copy of it. If you want a good adventure fic with really good worldbuilding that weaves together Equestrian history with Earth mythology, I would definitely recommend it.

Fallout:Equestria

I really enjoy Memoirs of A Magic Earth Pony.

It´s basically "what if Starswirl the Bearded was an earth pony whom History came to know as a unicorn?".

It's a surprisingly intelligently written fanfic, though a little slow and frustrating at times.
It deals with a fuck ton of issues.
Starswirl looking for a purpose in life in a society that is pretty racist, his struggles with his sense of self worth... There is also a lot of mathematical discussion; the way the author represents magic is as if it were a very precise science that literally works around math.
It gets pretty depressing at times, specially if you have dealt with self esteem issues, as well as studying something you don´t want to.
The narration is pretty neat too, eloquent when it needs to but keeping everything grounded. A highly recommended read.
