I'm pretty sure they meant to present his opinion as a legitimate and valid one. The real friendship lesson was about accepting people with different opinions, and he was the one who realized it first.

Twilight's ascension was also pretty stupid by itself, it was the conclusion to one of the worst episodes in the series, it didn't make any sense whatsoever and for the next 2 seasons it was very terribly handled, it also brought fort several just as bad episodes. Sure, that doesn't make twilight or her current appearances shit by default, and the concept by itself isn't necessarily shit, but thanks to history it now carries over, it is utter crap.
