Now that you guys have had a crash course on pen-and-paper RPGs, are any of you aware of this gem that is coming out later this year?

I've always wanted to get into D&D but all my friends are female, otaku, goth phase, k-pop fags.

Once somebody told me that your imagination can usually create better roleplaying games than shitty toy companies.
>>
>>28277625
When it comes to worldbuilding? Sure.
But having an established game system like d20 to build on is convenient.
>>
>>28277591
I have to admit today's episode turned me on to giving D&D-type games a try, but I have no friends.

Face it, Faust never wanted pony. She wanted Galaxy Girls. Pony was the consolation prize she never intended to stick it out with.

Mother is a disloyal faggot. I'd rather guzzle dad's cum than gurgle moms poisonous cunt juices. Father has been loyal and embracing. He's been kind and given us more content. Without him, we would not have what we have today.

roll20.net
someone told me about this website but i haven't gone on it yet. i too have no friends
>>
>>28277625
Sure, but for most people starting out, they want a connection to an IP they are already familiar with, and playing your own character within that established world is a good 'gateway' into roleplaying games.

Besides, there are 2 components to a published RPG (usually)

- the setting
- the system

The setting in this case is equestria, and anyone with a creative imagination can also make their own. There is no argument there.

the system is the actual meat of the game itself, where the dice, talents, attributes, the actual nuts and bolts underneath it all. That is usually not as easy to create because a good system is made with experience and lots and lots of playtesting.

Some people buy an RPG book for the setting they like, and may use their own system or another system for it. Some may buy this book for the adventures and setting details, and just play it with D&D 5th edition.

Some buy an RPG book for the system, and use their own setting or another.

Cavatore's got a good history and the game is set for a release this winter, as long as River Horse doesn't fuck up.

This group is literally the IDW of RPG publishing. I don't expect this to be anymore that a cheap attempt to empty brony coffers and the system will be generic RPG BS.
>>
>>28278034
Good thing we have plenty of fan-made systems to fall back on if this turns out to be shit, then.
>>
>>28278034
Confirmed for shit taste. IDW is filled with hack writers and artists.

Riverhorse is not. They license to a lot of different companies and IP's, but the stuff they release is leagues above IDW in consistent quality.
>>
>>28278094
Don't bother. You are likely dealing with a contrarian. This will be a popular item among /mlp/ and /tg/ crossover anons, so therefore people will pop up saying it's shit for that reason alone, using stretched arguments to justify their shallow stance on the subject.

Just ignore them.

Poe's laws a bitch like that, brony.
>>
>>28278116
The top three I'd recommend are:
The Savage Worlds of My Little Pony (based on the Savage Worlds engine)
There's also Roleplaying Is Magic dot com, a fun fan project that ran for 4 years,
and
Ponyfinder, which is based on the Pathfinder ruleset (which was based on the 3.5 D&D ruleset).

I'd suggest Savage Worlds out of the three, as it's the best for beginners. If you want something more traditionally fantasy instead of the fast-paced pulp action of Savage Worlds, wait until the Ponyfinder team updates their game to D&D 5th edition.
>>
>>28278341
And if the standard fantasy tropes aren't your thing, there's also
Poor Unfortunate Foals: a horror game about little ponies lost in the woods. Rules light and good for short campaigns of a few sessions.
Unknown Ponies: A hack of the 'Unknown Armies' engine, where you deal with conflict, horror, and the crisis of identity.

>>
>>28277591
I wonder if this will be more complicated than actual Dungeons and Dragons in the same way the card game is more complicated than Magic.
I would laugh.
>>
>>28279092
>so do we know anything about it?
There's a video interview with the creator from a few months back. Google it, should be on EqD somewhere.

>is it another goddamn d20 system?
No, you roll d4 d6 d8 or d12 depending on how high your skill is

>what are the core playable races?
Earth, unicorn, pegasus. No gryphons/zebras, in the initial version at least.
>>
>>28279432
Riverhorse does want to support the game, so they would like to release adventure modules, expansions, etc. No alicorn players in the initial release, but there may be in future ones, for example. Something like player zerbras and griffons wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.
>>
>>28279768
From the interview, it seems it may be possible to become ascended into an Alicorn. Because of course. Either way you can't start out as one.

Almost every western cartoon does a D&D episode in its lifetime.
Even Gravity Falls had one despite not being Hasbro, ditto for Spongebob which is Nickleodeon and the like.

Of course it wasn't.

I would expect, at the very least, a splatbook for things like (young) dragons, zebras, and griffons. Maybe donkeys, mules, yaks, deer, and bison, too, although those are far less popular.
>>
>>28279411
It's going to be more simple. Sort of an entry-level tabletop that families can play, so it's light on the crunchiness by design.
>>
>>28277785
Believe it or not, most of the tabletop gamers you meet at hobby stores are decent, because they're forced to interact with people on a regular basis.
>>
>>28278389
I was always hesitant to try Ponyfinder because its setting felt like "pony with the serial numbers filed off."
>>
>>28277751

You must be unfamiliar with Alessio Cavatore's work. Allow me to fill you in.

This guy cut his teeth writing rules for the most renown fantasy and scifi miniatures wargames on the planet. It was the editions he helped write that helped these two games in during the peak of their popularity. It can be argued that those editions are better than most of the others. In case you are not familiar with what games I am referring to, they are Warhammer 40,000 and Warhammer Fantasy Battles. Moving on, he left Games Worshop to form his own company and doing game design freelance. He then wrote the rules system for Kings of War, which is looking to dethrone Warhammer Fantasy Battles as the biggest fantasy battles game, giving Age of Sigmar and 9th Age runs for their money.

He is a very solid and accomplished games designer.

What is interesting about this case, is Hasbro owns Wizards of the Coast, the company that handles Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons and Dragons.

So why aren't they taking care of the MLP:RPG? Well Alessio, being a fan of the show, actually approached Hasbro and pitched the idea and got the go-ahead. Which is big because Hasbro could have likely just done it cheaper by keeping it in-house with WotC. Obviously someone at Hasbro recognized who he was and lobbied for it to happen.

Am I saying this game will be groundbreaking and change the face of roleplaying forever? Absolutely not. What I am saying is the man is a man of quality, and I expect no less from the book.
>>
>>28277624
If any of those fans cross over into the mlp fandom, this game may be very playable for you guys. For the tabletop roleplayers are filled with females, otakus, goths, and k-pop fags alike.

>>28282042
Of course let's not forget that Mordheim (arguably the best specialist game GW has ever released) and the Lord of the Rings Strategy Battle Game were both designed by him. He also helped with the designing of Bolt Action with Rick Priestly. All his work is generally rated highly among tabletop gaming enthusiasts. As far as I know, this will be his first pnp rpg, but the 2 mediums cross over frequently.

Are you trying to tell me there's some super game genuis making a mlp tabletop rpg. And that it'll be simple enough for kids and inebriated aduilts.
>>
>>28282042

>Well Alessio, being a fan of the show, actually approached Hasbro and pitched the idea and got the go-ahead.

That's pretty interesting. Didn't Weird Al and Patton Oswalt also basically ask to be in the show? You'd think Hasbro would be more willing to exploit the more talented members of the fanbase to - you know - make money and shit.
>>
I've always liked the idea of PnP games, but they always feel to complex for me, due to having to learn a fuck tone of rules all at once, that's why I stick to Diablo 1 and 2 when I want to play an RPG.

But, seeing the geek rage over best rule sets in this thread, what is really the best way for someone to transision from click rpg to pnp?
>>
>>28283079
Tails of Equestria when it comes out, if little kids can handle it then you can too.

Otherwise: Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition (the latest) is quite simple, and very popular.

If you want even simpler there are multitude of old school retroclones ("OSR" games) based on the early editions of D&D. Lamentations of the Flame Princess is the most prominent. These games have very simple rules, but tend to be unforgiving and deadly.
>>
I played D&D twenty years ago for about a year. Gave it up but still have friends and coworkers that play. Now that I'm moving away from video games it might make sense to come back. I'll definitely keep it in mind.
>>
>>28278396
I want Hackmaster original, MLP edition. It'll be accurate cause unicorn mages will be OP.
>>
>>28282857
I wouldn't say he's some super genius, but he is a very experienced and accomplished game designer, and the primary goal of the project is babies first pnp RPG, which is where you want to start if you've never picked up any of these games before.

I'm so sorry anon
>>
>>28285657
it's not 40k, it's FoE.

Long story short, my character was captured and tortured for 6 months, lost his right eye, left hind leg and severe crippling in his chest (reduced max health pretty bad so I was less than squishy).

THEN he was abandoned by the other PC's and left to die at the hands of a crazy zebra ghoul who was going to chop him up and sell his meat at her grocery store, but he was able to talk his way out of it, becoming her employee. He got a sweet ass plasma rifle (still have it too), an eye patch (Charisma bonus, kinda helped), a prosthetic leg, the armor, the fake stripes, and the tattoo.

Fast forward to where he is right now in a Solo campaign (me and the GM, original game disintegrated, GM wanted to do a solo game so he could practice and I could have fun but I secretly think he's obsessed with my character.) where he is currently disguised as a griffon, in a griffon base, trying to activate a special pumping system to allow him to steal the boat they have underneath the island this fortress sits on.

He has exactly 20% health left as he just won a 1 on 1 fight with the griffon boss and pulled a victory out of his asshole and SOMEHOW managed to save the zebra being held captive by these pidgeons too. Saved his life twice in fact.

The end goal of the game is to get to the center of something called "No One's Land" which is basically the LR dlc with a Thunderhead in the center and decide who gets to keep it.

I used to be like you, anon. I used to live for the click of the dice, for the acid tingle of Mountain Dew across the tongue, and the dangerously cheezy crunch of the cheetos. But as the campaigns I marched in became indistinguishable from each other, and my companions were renewed numberless times, I began to grow bored with the external manifestation of the world, and sought answers in the web that underpins and rules us all. It is a balm in times of gamelessness, and a boon when teaching games to newfags.

Do not mourn for me anon. This is the future I chose.

roll20 is a wonderful platform to play games on. Its fucking garbage for finding people.

-some fa/tg/uy with a lot of experience
>>
>>28278389
You uninformed dyke, while ponyfinder is a homebrew of pathfinder, the image in the OP is Hasbro's own original pen and paper ruleset for equestria, not a homebrew.

Reminder that Hasbro actually still owns D&D
>>
>>28280319

The people who play at comic shops/hobby stores/etc are those who don't have groups that meet in peoples homes to play.

That alone should tell you something.

Ideally, you get into tabletop gaming with friends, and expand your group if say, someone moves away, or has a life change that stops them from playing, by having people pull in other of their own friends. The more bearable people will find stable groups that meet in private with other bearable people. At best, the various shops are a place to audition for a more stable group.

Thats why finding groups on roll20 is the very very worst. Most of those fucks are people who can't even act normal enough to play at a store. You just always have to find people you know to play with.

Also, no gaming is better than bad gaming.

>>
>>28288290
Except drizzt is a popular character and actually pretty cool. Nobody likes thorax
>>
to ease you into it, you should try D20 modern

I was the doctor with an affinity for explosives of our group:
interrogated a bad guy by shoving my dynamite up his ass and threatening to light it
stole a police boat
blew up our boat while in it (accident), blew up the yacht we were chasing
blew up my lab while in it (accident) (got super powers from this and the UFO)
blew up my munitions factory while in it (accident)
blew up a UFO
used my motorcycle as a melee weapon
then the rock golem used it on me in the same manner
nearly blew up the car (it was the werewolf's grenade) we were in while chasing after a werewolf with a hostage
punched a robot with my diamond fist while running twice the speed of sound
stopped an entire alien invasion

another game we played, I was a martial artist
his nickname was Snack because he was introduced into the game by being trussed up like a turkey for the zombies
anyway:
we fought zombies
also learned intimidate from an ancient dragon, then used the new skill to keep a troll from ratting us out (natural 20)
we also fought ex military hired guns
got captured and dropped in the middle of a dessert from a plane while unconscious
punched a vampire through the heart
triple somersault driving a dune buggy back to our base
went undercover to find out what our enemy had in store, I didn't talk it over with my group either
made their boss wet and orgasm multiple times from watching me perform feats of agility and dexterity, becoming her number one
went into space via stargates and allianced with the neutral dragons to stop a war that was coming

all in all these games are hella fun once you get the rules out of the way

another gaming session I was the DM
we had enough people to play, but after a couple of sessions, one person got fired from their job and another quit so they both had to drop the game.
we re-ran the game with just 2 people and me being the DM
in order to do this, the two had to play 2 characters and to round it out, I played one as well
the characters were:
skeptical priest
samurai in training
werewolf hunter, who was a lesbian
tech geek who was the werewolf hunter's lover
female werewolf

we fought & saved mothmen, rogue militia, zombies, vampires and other werewolves
at one point the hunter was severly wounded, but the doctor back at base had made a fast healing serum
unfortunately, they didn't tell the hunter that is was derived from werewolf blood
when the female werewolf of the party changed (under duress) and howled in pain while fighting the vampire boss
it triggered the change in the hunter
suffice to say the hunter was pissed off that they were now what they hated

another game I played a dragon blooded female human that was worshiped and a half drow, half high elf female
the dragon blooded human ran away when they found out they were to be sacraficed
the half drow has her throat slit by her younger, full drow sister during a coup

we had dressed up as evil power rangers
accidentally killed a high profiled person through interrogation
jumped out of a 30 story window into the ocean
traversed sewer tunnels, killing huge spiders
scared a couple of guards at the end of the tunnel in the department store it led into by using a spider corpse on a sword and making spider noises
my two characters became lovers after a lengthy discussion

also played my female werewolf as a ranger in D&D setting we fought against an ancient evil dragon who called himself the Evil Emperor Wriggles
we caught him by tying an unbreakable rope to an item called the immovable rod (you activate it and NOTHING can move it until you deactivate it)
while he was trying to get away
>>
>>28288604

I had a pretty bitchin' boss fight and at least one good escape from another boss in my game.

And you are bad at reading comprehension.

It says ">in b4 we already have shitty homebrews" right there in the OP. The reply is saying OP is an idiot for preemptively brushing aside alternatives, like Ponyfinder, as "shitty homebrews."

Also, Hasbro owning D&D/WotC has literally no bearing on this product. It's licensed by River Horse.
>>
>>28290037
Still as shown in the thread the guy behind the RPG is really experienced and well known in these types of products. It's fair to say that this game will be rather high quality and equal, or surpass, Ponyfinder
>>
>>28290592
Eh, ponyfinder will continue to exist as an alternative for people wanting something different than in the op, and visa versa. I think it's dumb to argue one is better than the other because that gets to stupid edition wars which succeed in only making the community less approachable. Each game will have its own appeal and strengths. Ponyfinder would be good for roleplayers who want a grittier experience and some RPG experience. And ToE will exist for absolute beginners wanting the show experience, like no deaths and emphasis on friendship and such.

Diablo 1 is broken as fuck by today's standards, and wouldn't hold up well in a PnP translation.

Even if it did, translating it to MLP would make zero sense, because in MLP fighting is an absolute last resort that only shows up as a short sequence once every 10 episodes at most, while in Diablo Fighting is what Blizzard uses to compensate both for storytelling and setting.
>>
>>28296306
Someone here hasn't played Diablo one in some time it seems.
>>
>>28296380

I'll concede with that, it must be at least 7 years since last I played it.
I'd still argue it's broken as fuck, Sorcerer is by far the best class, even if you play another class manashield (spell shield? magic barrier?) is a must have, simply put, pretending to be a sorc is the only viable way to play.

And I still hold that Diablo has *very* little to do with MLP

Yeah, i feel bad for people that actually need a book full of pointless rules and images to create an amazing adventure, when i can do all that within my mind.
It's the same with music. I don't waste money on songs i just create it all within my superior atheist mind,
And don't get me started on people that go to museums to look at "art" when I can re-create the Mona Lisa 10x better with just my pre-frontal cortex which is sharper than any katana (and katanas are the sharpest weapon on earth, i'll have you know)
>>
>>28296412
You must have been playing wrong then, because I have beaten Diablo multiple times with each class, it might just be up to playing style.

As far as pony relations, none, just an idea for pony base, replace the repair, disarm traps, and recharge staves with cutie marks / special talent and I feel like it could be something.
>>
>>28298244

Well, clearly, if the game is telling me I'm a rogue, and even my character sheet is telling me I'm a rogue, yet "sneaking" around corners and firing arrows at targets isn't a viable strategy, something must be seriously wrong somewhere.

As for ponies, what would you do with the rest of the kit? Ponies almost never beat down monsters.
>>
>>28298288
Changlings, Dragon, Bugbear, Manticore, seriouslt, its like you don't watch the show.

And I doubt most players would want to play a Slice of Life PnP game. In fact, if you watched the dev interview, there is going to be combat options available and monsters.
>>
>>28298326
>Changlings, Dragon, Bugbear, Manticore, seriouslt, its like you don't watch the show.
Those are at most a one in ten episodes occurrence, and are rarely beaten by brute force.

>And I doubt most players would want to play a Slice of Life PnP game.
Then why the fuck are you even pretending you're playing an MLP game? I mean, if you're ignoring the one core, fundamental truth to the setting, the fact that friendship is magic, then what the fuck are you even playing?

I mean, hell, let's break down the examples you give:
>Changelings
Thorax, friendly. Changeling in Slice of Life: Friendly, yet persecuted.
>Dragon
Spike, friendly. Red Dragon in Dragonshy, Reasonable, not unfriendly.
>Bugbear
One-scene throwoff joke
>Manticore
Appeared hostile, just had a sore paw. Friendly.

If you're not playing a slice of life PnP game in the setting, you're not even playing in the setting.

Idea, what if we colab a book of campaigns for the official game based off of the conflict set ups in the show, but replace the show's characters with the players or NPCs, that way there will be a mix of adventure and sol?

Example: Sassy Flash (GM), a pegasus in town who is normally relaxed an laid back has gotten a big head from praise after she saved a filly in distress. You goal is to calm her down and show her how her showboating is making other ponies upset.

>Why would you use the two exceptions, and not the literal hordes of bughorses who got their shit kicked in by the M6?
Those two, along with Chrysalis herself, are the only changelings we know about. The only actual CHARACTERS, you need to remember this is a show.
Two out of three speaks plenty regarding the overall tone of the show.

>Then why is there a whole section of the official map labelled "bugbear territory"?
Couldn't care less.
The undeniable fact still remains, that:
Spike is a dragon
Ember is a dragon
Manny Roar is friendly
and so fucking on.

The """"official""""" map hasn't even been brought up as part of canon!

>There are plenty of antagonists that have been restrained or subdued using force, and others that have only been mentioned
I fully agree, and these show up roughly once every tenth episode, and as such are almost inconsequential to the overall tone of the My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic setting.

We should have a general to keep all the games in one place...

Anyone know what we should do?

Maybe when the game comes out, in order to join a game you have to provide a real photo of your character sheet, and have players use trips for their characters?
>>
>>28300388

You play on skype/IRC/roll20.

You discuss shit in a thread/general.
>>
>>28300388
The generals on /tg/ generally have the same resources.

Links in the OP to where players can get usually pirated copies of the different games and their supplements.

So there would be a link where to get ponyfinder, tails of equestria, etc. Then a few helpful resource site links. This helps stem the tide of "anyone have a download link" that we are sure to get plagued with.
>>
>>28299984
Not to mention Daring Don't and Pinkie Pride. I'm becoming more convinced this guy just doesn't retain what he watches.

>>28299788
How is all of this so difficult for you to understand? The game focuses on adventure stories, because that's what tabletop games do. Every session is literally called an "adventure." Slice-of-life episodes are a storytelling focus, not an inherent part of the setting.

>and as such are almost inconsequential to the overall tone
That's because the monsters are more often simply avoided, but the end result is the same: risk and adventure in a monster-filled world. Much of the slice-of-life stuff couldn't even happen in a less adventurous setting.

Tabletop simulator is kinda shit for RPGs.

It costs money, and is kinda wonky. Its best for like... board games or card games, not tabletop rpgs.
