This makes sense, really. None of the other Changelings seem to have considered the possibility of sharing love/friendship between themselves, nor do any other appear to be friendly. Thorax is probably one of only a few Changelings born with a rare "friendly" mutation. Normally these less aggressive hatchlings get eaten by their siblings as the newborns fight for dominance, but some miracle allowed him to survive to adulthood and escape their lifestyle which has left the colony in a vulnerable position. With any luck, he'll be able to pass on his knowledge of friendship (and the friendship gene) to others, leading the gene pool to a more sustainable path.

Thorax is statistically probably only one of many.

In fact, given Ponyville's lax attitude towards him and other various races, from dragons to griffins, there are presumably countless other closet changelings in disguise all across Equestria...or at least in little ol' progressive Ponyville.

They figured out the whole "pretend to be regular thing a long time ago, and successfully integrated into pony society.

This gives them all the love and friendship they could ever want, resulting in a complete lack of feral behavior.

Meanwhile, Chrysalis' gang are basically vampire pony ISIS.

They're a rogue faction of bugponies who inflame racism by carrying out campaigns of terror in the name of changelings, and people (like the viewers) who've never met any other admitted changelings wind up judging an entire race by the actions of a small minority.

And because Thor was one of them, that's why he had such difficulty integrating into the Crystal empire.

He just didn't have the knowledge or upbringing to blend in like his stealthier, non-terrorist brethren, which makes him not so much the first changeling to defect, but rather a defector whose difficulties are entirely a result of being born to a shitty hive of evil oedipal life-sucking shitlords who all (except Thor) worship their obviously crazy matriarch.
