What happened is he saw my phone background (pic related), and we got to talking about why I watch the show.
Now, I guess I was wrong to call this guy a "normie," but his only exposure to the whole anime/cartoon culture is through secondhand knowledge. Basically, he knows that Rule 34 exists because of Game Grumps or something.
Anyway, I mention that the show has a following online, and he puts two and two together and starts laughing at the fact that there's probably people who jerk off to the characters. I'm (uncomfortably) like "haha yeah, just like everything else on the internet," and the question arose from there.

When word got around my workplace (there's only like 8 of us) I had one person who was just excited that she knew a brony, one person who didn't know anything about it but knew I was weird already, and one guy who's into other cartoons told me he tried watching it but just never got into it. Granted, we're all pretty young and mostly into nerd shit already, so I guess I lucked out?

I've never been asked, because that's not an appropriate question to ask someone in most circumstances.
