This is like the single greatest reaction they could’ve had. Rainbow’s genuine concern met with Quib’s shrugging it off as ‘fans will be fans’ is so goddamn accurate– to the actual staff and to pretty much anyone who stays away from the sexual sides of their fandoms.

It’s also acknowledgement that they know it exists and don’t have a problem with it so long as it’s not actually harmful, which again, is like the single greatest reaction.

This whole episode was bizarre. I mean, first they got Patton Oswalt of all people to do a guest role, which I guess is sort of understandable since his daughter is a fan of the show, but it’s still surreal to see him here.

But then they titled the episode “Stranger Than Fan Fiction”, and made his character a satire of the worst kind of unpleasable fan. The plot is literally about Patton Oswalt’s character planning to pester an author at a fan convention about how they ruined the series. The episode’s lesson is that he was acting like a huge entitled jerk, and that it’s wrong to make things unpleasant for fans who don’t enjoy something for the same reasons you do.

It actually feels to me like this the first episode of the series where the moral was aimed at the adult fandom rather than the actual target demographic.

I'm a successful smutfic writer. I started making OCs that appeared in the sidelines of mane 6 focused stories. Eventually more and more OCs appeared and the focus occasionally shifted outright to the original characters to the extent no canon characters made an appearance, and my audience didn't even realize because they'd gotten so used to my OCs already. People don't even realize they're reading stories based purely around OCs anymore, I've tricked them all.

The moral of the story is, make whatever you like. Keep your colours at least somewhat tame, keep their personalities balanced between strengths and weaknesses, and give them a trait that makes them lovable and you're good to go.
