Zephyr is a horrible pony who should die in a fire, but it's still funny to watch him. It's the same as with any other good cringe comedy protagonist. He's an unlikeable tool precisely so that when bad things happen to him or people abuse and insult him it comes off as karmic comeuppance rather than petty cruelty. That's why this episode succeeded where Newbie Dash failed. RD is just too fundamentally good for the us to not feel bad for her when the torrent of abuse and misfortune pours in. Zephyr, on the other hand, is a total prick, so nobody gives a damn when he gets shocked half to death with lightning.

I'm just upset Rainbow Dash didn't see a bit of herself in him, especially after newbie dash.

Both of them tried to mask their insecurities and fear of failure with their over the top personalities, they also both think they're hot shit. With the difference that Dash actually is hot shit, of course, but still, it's a shame they didn't interact more. I actually thought that was they way the episode was going, Flutter's being upset with him but Dash pointing out she's had a similar problem. Kind of wasted potential tbqh familia, could have portrayed Dash in a really positive light here.
