Coincidences are a funny thing.

Exactly one year ago, the one person I've considered a good friend ended their life. In the goodbye letter to me, they've apologized. They apologized for not being able to truly be my friend, despite how much they wanted and tried to be, because I made it so difficult. They said that they almost despised me for it at one point, how oblivious I was to all the ways I hurt them... but they forgave me.
Until I read the letter, I really didn't think about it, I didn't see - I didn't remember all the times I chose myself over them, the times I neglected to listen, the times I just couldn't understand their problems.
They said I shouldn't feel bad.
They said that they understood that I was that way because I didn't know better, and that without knowing one is wrong, it's hard to become better.
They said, of course, that I'm not to blame myself for what they did, that it's not my fault.

But I do blame myself. All the time. But I'm also kind of angry.
They were wrong, I think. If they told me all that earlier, I would have tried harder. I could have changed. I have changed. Little by little, but I'm putting in the effort to be.. an acceptable person.

I used to think the same way as you. "Why do I hurt the only people who love me? What is wrong with me?". Turned out I'd not only been guilted, but deliberately led to think this way.

Not that your friend neccessarily had NPD. But he/she does sound emotionally manipulative, and the fact that you are unaware of it enforces the point because these people are great at hiding it even from smart and perceptive people.

And yes, even people who love themselves so much can be suicidal.
