Why does this series hire incredibly cheap staff (contract even) for such important roles?
Because it's cheaper to hire Canadian writers and VA's. And it's cheaper for the Canadians to subcontract to the Philippines for animation.

The writers are in the US.

They're all in the US? I thought some of them were in Canada.

Because quality is not important.
All the show has to do is sell plastic crap. Hasbro/DHX doesn't need to win awards or get praise from the critics...the show exists to promote the toys, which is Hasbro's real business.
So they hired the cheapest team they could find hanging around the bus station. As a result the show is a terribly written mess, but that doesn't matter. Hasbro is making money while other toy companies post losses. Their half-ass approach is working.
It's just business.

It just seems bizarre that this series that makes news is hired by the writing equivalent of Denny's chefs.

Fuck if I know.

That came from NLJ thread.

Because it costs less.
You answered your own question.

>As a result the show is a terribly written mess
Though you'd never know it by listening to /mlp/'s rampant defense of the show.
