I think it might be because people were still reeling from the first entry. The 2nd entry was a lot better then the first, but people are likely to compare and associate sequels to their priors. Hell, I might be doing that myself just a little. Of course, I've also put some weight into something in particular: sequels don't tend to shine when compared to their priors (looking at you Atlas Shrugged, you should have stopped at the 2nd), so when something proves to be the exception not once, but twice, it's usually taken well.

What I do believe though, is that the 3rd entry redeems the mistake that was the 1st.

People also took it pretty well that the 3rd didn't rely so heavily on FiM lore (or Twilight or something...), so maybe that had something to do with it.
