"Eclipses" was the first collaboration this thread did. At that point everyone was just throwing in their random chunks of what they can do. Synthfag decided to secretly gather some of these samples and that formed a basic foundation of a song. Then it was forgotten. After 1,5 years i decided to pick it up and half a year later we finished it. It turned out good, but when i started working with it i hoped for even better outcome. Biggest problem there is form - me and my partner should have thought it out way thoroughly at the very beginning.

Right. Start off with Eclipses (formerly MLP-PLAYS2) and Still Going, even though I only did small bits on them.
As Anoridan said, Eclipses was the first collaboration the threads started. People were just noodling about in a "musicians thread" that got rather popular and then the noodling got stitched together by an Anon (Synthfag) and was expanded upon.
Back then, it was OP (TwiFi), Synthfag, Guitarfag, Bassfag, Drumfag (Wootmaster?) and a few others. I didn't come along until the second thread and, some time later, went by the name of Harmonicafag (for consistency).
To clarify, whilst I lurked the threads back then, I didn't contribute to PLAYS2 back then: I just redid the acoustic guitar for Anoridan.
Whilst we were in full swing, we also started another piece: MLP-STILL_GOING. I originally did the electric guitar at the beginning (as well as my namesake: harmonica) but that's been swapped out since because the quality, in both audio and performance, were lacking.
Back then, audio quality wasn't top priority as everything was done through vocaroo.
As Synthfag & company were fretting on how to carry on with the two aforementioned pieces, we started yet another: MLP-STREETS. By this point, I think things for these pieces started to lose steam and it got slow until they grounded to a halt.
Over a year later, Anoridan and Sound Guy picked up Eclipses and Still Going, respectively, and continued to expand and flesh them out until you've got what you hear today.
Streets is still in the pipeline and will probably be on the second album.

Other songs I'm on (and play a bigger part in) are Brothers and Waifu Blues/Sundown. That'll be for another post.

Boom De Yada started as a thread way back in 2014. Pic related. Overtime, we got a bunch of anons to sing for it. I should probably say "sing" because half of them sped through parts and a good chuck just couldn't sing. The amount of work I put in to time aligning those was absurd. After being in this project a few months after it's conception, I mostly offered my voice, lyrics and composition work to a handful of songs here. Buuut that also meant that I ended up biting more than I could chew with collaborating on so many things while not focusing on my own stuff (that's why Yonkorns is my single solo contribution to this album).

I studied it in school. Same with Anoridan. I can try and answer recording and mixing questions involving guitars. As for what I did, I used Guitar Rig 5. I wish I could have recorded an amp, but I live in an apartment. This video sums up distorted guitars pretty well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0MeM6QzvM5E
I personally like using a sm57/ribbon mic combo in any case. You just have to make sure that the mics are in phase. The tricky thing is that the tiniest of movements can change the sound. Also know that everything around 10kHz and up is not needed for electric guitar (acoustic is a different story). Double tracking and panning the two takes left and right help massively for a big, wide sound. I've found that the bass guitar can also greatly influence how the guitar ends up sounding.

Do both. In a studio, the engineer should always take a DI (the dry guitar signal only) and mic recording. The DI allows for reamping (using something like this http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/JCR) and for digital processing (like Guitar Rig 5).
As for advantages or disadvantages, the mic recording of your amp is ultimately what you want, but you can't go back and change what you did. A DI signal is more to record, but it allows for getting just the right sound before recording the amp miced.

Basically SG said everything, i just have to add that while digital processing like Guitar Rig 5 (or Amplitube 4 in my case) can give you access to large variety of sounds that you can't afford otherwise, they still doesn't sound completely right, none of them. Mostly in terms of dynamics, if you would compare how guitar transients sound in irl-amped and digitally-amped signal, you'll see the difference.
In short, go digital first to understand what do you like and save up for real things later.

My track in the album (You make cookies I watch) started with a piano idea written during a sunny day at the conservatory. In the pic you can see the first 3 bars that started everything. The idea was then developed and orchestrated in StudioOne. I remember playing all the instruments (drums included) through my keyboard and zero quantization was applied, I think it gave the piece this natural and carefree feeling that I still like.

With Brothers... back then, there was this Aussie floating about by the name of Ocarinafag, who played stuff on his ocarina; most notably, some melodies from anime like FMA and DBZ. That's where the cover of FMA's Brothers came from.
I did the arpeggiating guitar, TwiFi (then Blue Ice) did the singing and acoustic guitar and... I think it was Not Bassfag who did the bass.
This was all around the same time we started with Eclispses/Still Going/Streets which is why it sounds rough around the edge compared to the more recent stuff.
Sound Guy remixed the old version and added the cymbals/bells which is what you have on the album now.

Now, with Waifu Blues/Sundown, I really don't remember much so I had to look it up.
One day, shortly before Christmas 2014, this fella called YB came along with a rough instrumental called Waifu Blues (waifuBlues_v01_b01.mp3) on which he did guitar, piano, bass and MIDI strings. It was what's now known as Sundown practically finished.
I added harmonica and he polished it all up into a nice instrumental and... at some point, it got split into two things, with Anoridan making a song out of it with Engie (and Vsevolod/Seva on a Gibson Balalyka) and the instrumental carrying on as an instrumental.
Listening to them now, there's more of a difference between the two than I realised.

I started working on the project in the second thread and contributed some early guitar stuff to Eclipses when synthfag was leading that song project. Didn't start using a trip until a month later. The first piece I wrote, fly into the sky, was written 2 years ago with the thought of flying through clear skies then progressively getting more cloudy and dreary.

Well then. I joined about 1 year ago. I "made my entrance" with a song that isn't on the album BECAUSE SOUNDGUY FUCKING FORGOT TO ADD IT, in any case i joined the group with the song IWTCIRD and was seeking for assistance on a abandoned song of mine. I don't even rember the title of it but it was about Trixie for I was a Trixiefag back then. I tried hard but I gave up because fuck the song wasn't in my range back then.

After I ditched the song I went on with my first song of the Album, Waifu Problems. With the help of Anoridan I then completed the song and made a music video of it. It has gotten really good feedback and it encouraged me to make more.

My goal is to convey my point of view, my emotions into the songs I made, make them two-faced because nothing is black and white. And try to make the Pony as subtle as possible. So that the songs followed the spirit of MLP itself, life lessons, my songs are also lessons to be learned you could say.

Waifu Problems was made in a time where I had no waifu, ha! Well that was not the only thing, as mentioned I convey emotions and lessons to be learned. So it was no coincidence I was having lots of troubles with 3DPD. I Am Awesome. Yes these words surely mark how good the song has been taken as it's one of the best songs judging from you guys. you guys made me so happy for that thanks alot fags So the song came to be when I became a Dashfag. Now you're probably gonna comment on how my taste get's shittier with time :^). So I wanted this song to be this high-octane rock which is also my favorite type of music, I'm pretty sure Rainbow Dash would also like that. But I wanted to convey a message that being "oh so awesome" is not all sunshines and rainbows. Slowly becoming an adult was part of my life since at that time I was about a month away from starting a new life (or simply starting to work). Ok, speech time.
For me, this project is the good place to practice my skills and make music i love working on without heavy obligations and strict deadlines. I was working on my music in a vacuum for a few years and participation in this was one of the ways of breaking that glass around me. The team here is really nice. Most of people here aren't professionals by any means, but for me it's just another challenge. Anyone (almost) can take multitrack that was recorded really good and not fuck it up on mixing stage. But here, well, let's just say i've got my experience i wanted. And the people themselves are really good. I'm very glad i know The Sound Guy and Engie not just because they are good engineers, but they have their brains and hearts all in the right places. Harmonica too, he's talented guy and his help and determination here was really important, WAY more important than he gives himself credit for. Working with Dzahlus (Starlight) was sometimes hard, but he's great guy and even when his ideas (and determination to implement them in his pieces) make me hug my pillow and cry i work on them nonetheless because there's something in his work that can really move you and he'll learn to express it really good given time and practice.
I wish YB with whom i worked on three pieces would show his creative talent and ideas on pieces of others more maybe he does - i can't detect him well and he prefers to keep his anonymity most of the time
And there's FL, his spirit defines a lot here. This community would be completely different without him. Listen to "Just for kicks", his masterpiece.

There's a lot of others and their efforts are really important too but the bottom line is i love these guys no homo and enjoy working with them. We grew into a nice little collaborative community here. I'm looking forward to making of second album.

I play piano/keyboard mostly, although I can also wring a few basic chords out of a guitar. I compose electronic music mainly, often with poppy melodies and sometimes rock/punk influences (whatever that means), but genre is less of a concern to me overall.

Winter Rig Up is nice, strings are unusual addition to the punk. You have a solid sound, that's good.

The usual problem with punk here is that we don't have a really large variety of singers who can sing it.

I don't think we should higher the threshold of quality because part of what sets this album apart and makes it so unique is how we didn't take ourselves too seriously with some of the tracks on it. We had fun making it and that's what matters, and I think the audience can tell when a song or album was made with genuine fun and they like it.

We should encourage that but we shouldn't restrict it too hard. In current state, when we're trying to write lyrics, they become at least somehow board- or pony-related. Take Eclipses for instance. Given context of time and place it's obvously pony-related, but if you just sumble upon it in random place you won't take the hint. I guess it's a way to do things too.

Sometimes constraints help produce better, more focused content. Take the first few Balloon Party albums and then compare them with the latest one where they tried to move away from the pony focus (Chromatic Horizons). I honestly think enforcing ponies only isn't that big of a restraint either. The world of the show and the fandom is a big place. It should be easy to draw inspiration from it. If I wanted to hear non-pony shit I'd go on Spotify.

Less songs. Probably half the amount of >no fun allowed max. One song per person excluding collabs should be fine. As far as concept goes, it's an -iffy subject. The Twilight Dies at the End project a few years ago was concept, but that failed after a few months. I think it'd be cool though if done properly and there is a unanimous decision.

Additionally, there should be a bar of quality this time around, though from what I heard on this album, it may not even be necessary. Pony-related songs are always encouraged, but I don't think every song needs to be.

Make it more pony-related for sure. The number of songs on the next album I think should be determined by what songs we feel deserve to go on the album, instead of placing a song number floor or ceiling. If it becomes a concept album, the concept should be something show-related.

I'd understand if this may be too dificult to do, but it would be cool if you could include sample lyrics a la Replica by Oneohtrix Point Never (pic related) for the sample-based tracks like Flut. Basically, just list what the prominent samples are in order of appearance without worrying too much about repitition.

Again, I'd understand that it may be impossible to rediscover what the origin of each jumbled sample is, and I'd hate to spoil the grand release of this album by giving you extra work, so this is just an idea if you guys happen to still know where all the samples come from.

Alright, so this collab concept might sound like it's trying to be edgy, but it's not, trust me. Pic related shows the lyrics (just the rhythm; all notes are Bb because that is the key of the song). I do not have much experience writing vocal melodies or notating vocals, so I apologize for any oddities. The lyrics themselves are an old poem I wrote, originally about a girlfriend of mine commiting suicide (a few years back, no need to feel sorry). I expanded upon this poem to tell a story about Fluttershy commiting suicide (in my imagination, sung from the perspective of Rainbow Dash). The chord progression is Bb-Cm-F7-Gm7-Am7-Dm7-Cm-F7, with another progression, repeated once, that goes Bbm-Cm-Ebm-Fm. The instrumentation is guitar-bass-drums, though I was thinking of replacing guitar with piano. I recorded the guitar and the bass (simply a dry guitar rec lowered an octave, though parts are MIDI due to technical issues). The drums are MIDI. I would like to have a live drum rec and a vocal rec.

Here is an instrumental version of what music I envision. Due to not being a singer myself, and not possessing a quality mic, I used a hihat to represent the rhythm of the vocals (currently there is no melody for them)

OK, the full album YouTube video's description has been updated with the time-stamps for all the songs. Also, the google doc and spreadsheet are now set to view only for archiving, as they no longer need to be edited (unless someone thinks something else really needs to go in there). Lastly, Dzahlus says he's going to do a simple music video special for Boom De Yada. And with that, I think we can finally close the chapter (or album, I should say) on this. All that's left to do is shill it more.
Now then, it's time to get all feelsy and say thank you to everyone. I copy and pasted the below text from the bonus items with some extra personal words:
To everyone who worked on this album, thank you so much. What once was just a crazy idea actually came to life, bearing the fruits of our labors in the form of 51 songs. We barely thought it'd get to 30. It look two years, some drama, and a lot of bad Vocaroo files, but we did it. We actually did it, and it couldn’t have happened without the support and efforts of everyone in the thread. We proved that /mlp/ can finish a project, and even have fun doing it.
As for myself, this has been such a great two years. From the long nights of mixing at both home and school to waking up to see what happened in the thread while I was asleep (assuming it didn't die), it was all so much fun, and I'm so happy that people put in so much effort. I wanted to show this board could actually complete something besides lewd greentext, and you all delivered in spades. This project was also the first time I put my music out there for others to hear, not wanting to have future regrets of just watching from behind the screen. And, let me say, I'm so glad I did. Heck, some of you guys have even become great friends of mine. Fug, I'm actually tearing up writing this. Again, thank you all so much. I will never forget what we accomplished, and I look forward to working with everyone once again on album number 2.
