When you support an unpopular ship you can always add your own plot and headcanon how their relationship would look like.

When it comes to popular ships, you can't do that, because most of the fandom already created their own headcanon of relationship.

Example: SoarinDash - they fall in love with each other because they're in the Wonderbolts and are both pegasi.

As for an unpopular ship, example:

SoarinShy or SoarinTwi - ??? No one heard about these ships, so you can add your own headcanon of their relationship.

When we learned that Cadance also ascended like Twilight, combined with McCarthy's line of "Twilight will not out live her friends" and the fact that immortals usually don't marry mortals for obvious reasons, people assumed that ascended alicorns aged normally while born ones aged slowly. Everyone believed that Luna and Celestia were born alicorns because Faust said so and the Journal of the Two Sisters seemed to correlate with that. But with the S6 premiere all that has been called into question.

I would say that's just Josh Haber's incompetence (which technically was), but after thinking about it, we wouldn't have to have these arguments about silly fuck ups in dialogues if the story editor did his fucking job and sit all the sceenwritting staff during production and say : "Yo, take this, these are the fundamentals that you have to learn, now go and have fun, but don't forget to give me your scripts when you're done so that shit stays as consistent as possible, ok?"
