Make him just a normal guy getting caught up in the magical bullshit that entails guarding the princess of love, captain of the royal guard and their new baby.

Make him relateable to how we would be just trying to do our job, trying to strike up conversation with royalty to work up the courage to ask them out. Not be a forced love interest, he's just like any other guard only he's trying to stand out a bit so he gets some spotlight time.
