I think Big Jim is a bit confused about the context of what 'canon' means.

Here's the thing: none of the show writers need to read the comic. The show writers have gone on record at cons saying that they explicitly HAVEN'T read the comics. No one on Hasbro's staff, Big Jim or otherwise, is going to correct a show writer if their episode clashes with a previous comic. If this were the case, the CMC wouldn't have greeted Discord frightened in MNFBKD, or the Umbrum brought up in the Sombra timeline in Cutie Re-mark.

The comics have no bearing whatsoever on the show but the show defines what you can / can't do in the comics. Reformed Sombra is never going to show up in the show, nor is many other comic exclusive elements. That is what makes them non-canon. It's the same deal with Equestria Girls but at least THAT has the added bonus of being written by show staff.

Because it's basically the closest of an answer they'll get to that question considering the show hasn't touched Chrysalis and changelings (barring the timeline shit in Season 5 finale) for years, and it's entertaining enough to satisfy them.

But that doesn't mean the events that happened in the Chrysalis arc are canon to the show, it's just a fun side story. The map shown in that arc completely clashes with the actual canon map given by the show staff, and again, Jim wouldn't make any show writer change their plot if it clashed with something from the comics.

Take this upcoming episode: Trixie has had multiple run-ins with the Mane 6 in the comics under much more pleasant circumstances but Twilight still seems to treat her as she would a former antagonist. I would bet money she'll comment having not had any sign of her since Magic Duel which contradicts the comics, and that Jim would not ask any such correction on the writer's part.

I'd enjoy seeing more relationships spring up in the background, and having a few gay couples in the background would be great too. It's kinda hard for me to nail down my thoughts on this but to me it's like seeing a natural progression in the world if that makes sense? I don't mean that the show should follow current social/political trends or anything like that, and they shouldn't do episodes about stuff like this to pander to anybody, or force the main six into ships. What I'm getting at is that I like to see the world change and develop with the show, I'll list some examples to illustrate my point.

>background character continuity (like Steven Magnet)
>Scenery changes (Twilights library getting destroyed/Twilights castle)
>Worldbuilding(Manehatten,Griffonstone etc)
>New buildings/ponies pop up in town

I don't want a static world that stays the same episode to episode, and this show does a pretty good job of creating a dynamic world, and introducing relationships can be a part of this dynamic process. Now I can understand why some people don't want shipping, especially amongst the Mane 6, but would it be that bad if we saw nods to new background pony couples (Hetero and Homo)? Even just brief scenes of a couple passing by in the background and cuddling? I'd personally love to see something done with Lyra and Bonbon but perhaps it'd be better to start off small scale and not make an episode centered on the topic. Anyway that's just my thoughts on the discussion, if anybody wants me to clarify my rambling just let me know.

This one, of course, doesn't make sense. Another criteria is how it's done, not just strictly whether it makes sense or not. Dragonquest for example was an excellent premise that made a ton of sense, but was ruined by an awful writer.

A romantic relationship between the two wouldn't be a healthy one, because they can't see eye-to-eye, on the same level. Look at how Dash acts whenever she's around Fluttershy, she looks down on her, or even past her. FS is at worst a burden (Dragonshy) or at most a sick puppy in need of tender care (Hurricane FS). RD is sometimes a guardian, sometimes bordering on being a bully.
Compare that to how RD connects with Pinkie or Twilight. Sure Pinkie is a bit too much at times, and sure RD has important friends and tasks that don't all involve Pinkie, but they're genuinely happy when they're for example pranking together. For Twilight it's mostly over Daring Do and similar, and I wouldn't say their connection is as strong, at least not yet.

The lead writer choose what comic want to draw and write first and assign all the other option to the other artist/writer team.

Why?

I don't even mean that in the meme sense, I mean literally 'why should there be LBGT representation'? For what purpose do little girls need to be exposed to that? WHY do LBGT deserve to be represented in a show focusing not around sexual preferences but around themes of friendship and slice of life story telling?

Why purpose does throwing in LBGT serve? For their extreme minority? Why not throw in a Muslim pony or add more Asian/Hispanic ponies while you're at it?

'Representation' is never, EVER a good excuse for drastically changing a dynamic in any sort of fiction. It leads to token characters who exist to fill a quota or soapbox rather than to tell a story. If you can come up with a good excuse to bring in LBGT (which I doubt he can), one that has a well written story supporting it and is made the better for it including LBGT elements, then go for it.

But just making a character come out is as lazy and unprofessional as fanfiction.
