I meant to say that there is a lot of evidence that suggests that Spike chooses the life he has, not that he has some forced servitude.

Who says he isn't fulfilled? Dragon Quest was all about him thinking he should be a rough, tough big shot dragon. At the end he found he was happy being a witty dragon butler all along.

That choice lead into Gauntlet of Fire where his talents allowed him to effect a massive political shift in favor of Equesria as well as avert a war. I think he's doing fine as he is.
