It's not very good, but then again there were only 4 episodes so far. The pilot was meh (but not bad - just not very good either), e03 was pretty good and e04 was mediocre for a CMC episode (so rather unenjoybale compared to regular episodes).
Let's see what the next episodes bring.

The season is average so far because McCarthy, Larson, and Amy Keating Rogers are gone as writers. There was some podcast where Larson had given some detail on just how important the story of a season is. They basically get to pick which premises to approve while also having huge influence on how the final script comes out.

The episodes we have got so far are acceptable but they have no "spark" that puts them higher than average. Josh Haber as the story editor seems to me like he is very focused on playing it safe, creating pointless dialogue in order to cover for "What if's" that the audience might have (CMC exploring equestria/Sombra hiding the crystal heart), and is just general a by the books kind of guy. He's not exactly bad, but he just doesn't seem to know how to make something go above and beyond out of the constraints given by hasbro.

Season 6 was already off to a bad start because of Hasbro's forced Flurry Heart crap, which was never going to live up to some of the epic scale things in the past no matter who had written it. Season 5 was truly the last good season we're ever going to get. The majority of passionate crew members were still with the show, they had perfected the variety of tones and topics to cover, and they had the opportunity to do very interesting things and progress character development in a meaningful way.

Looking at the upcoming episodes, the mediocrity of it is going to be in full force. It's going to be quite the feat to recover from the handicap of losing so much of the crew to the movie and other places, but I'm hopeful that there'll be at least a few flukes that will lead to the occasional great episode.

This season honestly feels like it hasn't really started yet. The episodes have been decent, but literally the only purpose they've served is to act as set-up for later episodes and giving answers to open-ended stories that were started in Season 5.

Both S5 and S6 are forgettable so far. There are hardly any fantasy elements in a world based on magic. Everything is either happening in a bland Crystal Empire, in our modern relatable magicless Manehattan or just in boring Ponyville. It's just a dead episode right after a dead episode. Last fantastic/original elements were in S4 (breezies and their world, RainbowFalls, Ortheos dog, Giant plant worm, Tirek's arc)

It's because for some of these people, it's the only place they know. It's their only friends, their only communication to the outside world that thinks somewhat like them. They wallow in potty and try to make others think the show is absolute shit and can't leave because they are losers.

Do I think the show has a different tone than season 1-3? Yes. Do I think the show has gone in a direction I don't like as much? Yes. Does that mean I will stop watching? No, because there are still episodes that capture the thing I came to the show for in the first place. The Maui episode 2 weeks ago gave me a good feeling because it showcased the characters understanding one-another, showing how their friendship has grown and they understand how one-another feels and can tell when something is off.
