He's likely wiser than almost any dragon alive, even the oldest ones if they really are largely separate from ponies.

You're expecting too much. He was never alone with his species, and he discovered himself in Dragon Quest just fine (the only "problem" was that the dragons there were total assholes and it didn't paint a great picture about their race in general).

Friendship is magic, but its not a magic he has, in any form, been able to utilize in its various interpretations thus far (EoH, Rainbow Power), and Zecora already stated that Dragon Greed is what makes them grow. Its even perpetuated that greed in general is a part of their culture seeing that older dragons have hordes and younger dragons aspire for the same, even in their games.
