According to the last movie the flow of time in the space between the two worlds is erratic, hence why Twilight didn't show up till the end, Sunset is roughly Twilight's age even though she was Celestia's student before her, and why the Dazzlings appear to be teenagers and relatively fresh from Starswirl's foul by the start of RR.

Simply put, it's like the Warp. What does it say about equestrians when it appears as little more than a disorienting light show? Probably that they are utterly alien lifeforms from one of the most profane places in all of creation.

In my mind they have a cultural gap separating them from normal folk and they either haven't adapted to human customs or they've chosen to hold onto and apply their own ways when they don't have to hide their true nature.
I also enjoy exploring sirenkind in general and I've writen a few things about them that another anon here was kind enough to vocaroo with his awesome soothing voice. The initial idea was to write a whole audio documentary, but sadly I lack the knowledge and sufficient material to make one.
