And where are the minor villains? See, this is why the comic should have at best just make Hope join forces with the Changelings and be done with. But no, for some reason we needed three other fractions that at best only work as minor bullies.

Its always these adventure arcs man. They get worse and wrose and worse. The sliceo f life stuff remains decent, but this shit is god awful in how contrived and asinine it is.

And yet in the darkness there is good points to it. They needed different motivation for Sombra;'s turn, maybe he realizes the umbrum affected her in some way.
And if it was Hope alone going on the quest to revive Amore, being told she lvies by a fading sombra, that would be actually pretty damn decent.

First issue was good. Honestly still had worlds of potential despite even the horribly misused 'villains' team up.

Second it all started going down hill. The villains willingly ally with Sombra (as if Chryssy wasn't bad enough), everyone worfs hard so Sombra looks badder (including the princessess in one panel) and Hope confirms she is a completely unrepentant bitch with no concern for her peoples' safety, or even her country's.

Third got a littttttle bit better, providing slight justification for Hope being tricked (doesn't explain where the flying fuck she thought anything other than telling a princess WHICH SHE DID AFTER SHE STARTED ATTACKING THEM first before all this... insanity started though) and giving a fair amount of screen time to Cadance, something she desperately deserves/needs. Still flounders because not a sole calls out Hope on her awful decisions and continuously makes things worse for no reason, and while the Deus Ex Machina for how Twilight got out IS explainable from the Luna arc it makes no sense why it doesn't work more than once.

Fourth starts off worse and only gets worser. The princesses job (again, this time off screen entirely), Ponyville gets a nice scene in trying to save the town that makes no freaking sense in how they put up such a good fight when the entire Crystal Guard apparently failed (not a single Crystal Pony helps in the fight either), they bring in Discord for no reason when he could solve all this in a microsecond, and... godddamnit, do I even need to explain why I hate the ending? Sombra and Hope are instantly forgiven with absolutely no consequences for their various misdeeds, Sombra turns around at the last possible second and is given undue credit for saving the entire empire, the princesses.... somehow turn him good again (wonder why they just didn't do this before instead of banishing him?) and he and Hope get to wander off into the sunset, likely to endanger/traumatize/ruin more lives as they have.

God for some reason Celestia has a very punchable face in these comics

I storytime the same way with really small changes occasionally to give the comic a fair chance to shine or drown on it's own.
I don't think I can do anything in particular to try and make the comics feel worse or better if I keep myself relatively quiet the whole time.

I do hope that some day the comics maybe come back to a point that /mlp/ can like them, but IDW will have to do that. I remember having fun with the micros and some of the earlier main series comic threads.

IW, LD, and FF get no redemption, which honestly sours their characters irrevocably by this point, and of course Whitley has to throw in a sequel hook to write more of his shlock after having all characters except his OC and his appropriated canon character turned OC do everything wrong and then have everyone love them for doing one right thing at the end (sorry for all the slavery I guess)

This was terrible. I cannot express any more how much Hope pisses me off as a character, but this ending with Sombra is like Reflections and the Pet ending had an ugly child together. It's rushed, it's nonsensical, it's insultingly immature despite the supposed dark themes they were going for at first, it's just mind numblingly BAD.

Part 4- 2/10 (Ponyville helping is literally the only thing that saves it, that and Hope's message about destiny which, for all her faults, is a good speech but goddamnit she is NOT that reasonable of a pony)

Well then.

For the division of the ride, the start was a 6/10, the middle two issues combined being a 7/10 and this final issue being a 5/10.

The issue has a lot going on for it at the beginning, lots of potential and before the counterattack of the pony rebellion, full of tiny bits of hype. The bad came in the middle and the end where everything just kinda came at a fast pace, characters before were forgotten and the rest of it was just Hope being passive aggressive on Sombra to change him in about two panels or so. Perhaps the biggest fault of the final issue is the ending, which just turned Sombra back to normal (which was like a disney logo thrown into the ending just to be less bitter sweet). Of course rushed endings aside, it's alright for a children's book but it's really lacking when you read it over and over again.

Hope's character is still a mixed bag for me. She's tricked, decieved and ultimately clueless on a lot of things. She had a good start but down a loopy road.

This wouldn't be the first time MLP had a quick ending, both in IDW and the show. I guess it just really lowers my expectations a lot.

The whole saga in itself? I'd say just a 6/10. Better in the start, bitter in the end. The final issue is just well, eh. I had some bit of fun.

I can't wait to see how canon this would be. This has to be the first IDW arc to show a fully reformed villain that breaks status quo of their life.

Out of everything this comic arc did, strangely the whole Sombra turning good thing doesn't annoy me much. Guess cause I expected it. Although the zapping him into his good form I didn't expect.

However everything else like the whole team up with Chrysalis which didn't make sense, Celestia and Luna getting rekt in one page, everyone in general just jobbing hard, Sombra being overly powerful after JUST being revived. Iron Will and the others just disappearing with no consequences, and Hope being stupid throughout the arc is what did annoy me. Oh and not to mention a whole event happened "offscreen" and the last issue begins with candyass and twi already captured.

Everything was done in such a dumb fashion just to get to this outcome and our heroes did nothing except get bested at every turn which made them look incompetent.

1. Cut most of the shit of issue 1. Let just Hope team up with Chrysalis in a starting issue than attack the Crystal Empire with them, as the changleings have replaced some citizens with changleings to infiltrate the place. Bring Sombra back at the end

2. Second issue kinda as it is, but with Celestia and Luna not showing up, instead Sombra turning all the Crystal Ponies into statues as they attempt to save the mane 6 and fight off the changelings, showing they are not apathic anymore and want to be free. Sombra and Chrysalis team up and defeat Twilight and Shining Armor, who actually put up a decent fight beforehand. What makes Hope at this point question her loyalty to Sombra is him making the other Crystal Ponies suffer, despite her pleads.

3. Issue 3 in parts with Chrysalis learning about Sombra's nature as Umbrum, hinting on past encounters with them. Only she does not tell Sombra about it, instead actually adressing the mane 6 down the line and using her drones to free them & get into contact with Celestia and Luna. Not because she wants to be the good guy, but she is pragmatic enough to realize, an Equestria with the Umbrum is worse than not defeating her enemy. Also, let Hope have a nervous breakdown when she realizes she had been used by the Umbrum and let Cadance beat her ass when she tries to warn Sombra. Also, cut the shit with her trying to point out Cadance must have rage in her heart, as that is just pointless and did not go anywhere.

Anderson realizes his place in the bigger picture of the franchise. Keep him from doing controversial shit and he's fine even if he will never learn how to conduct himself professionally or be a decent person. Stories he writes are generally harmless.

It seems to me that Whitley thinks he is better at writing the series than the people who write the show. This consistently shows up in his stuff. Problem is that he has little to no clue why people enjoy the writing in FiM in particular. So it comes off as the ramblings of an out of touch corporate executive almost, despite him being a creative.

What he thinks the franchise should be is so far from what it is and what people want that of course there is some disconnect. This goes for IDW in general really. Whitley is just aggressive about it in ways that none of the other writers are.

Agreed. I really enjoyed the pets issue and as stupid and memetic as that scene was, it's honestly not too hard to ignore. You can pretty much the skip those two or so pages and be fairly satisfied with it.

Personally, I didn't mind making him sympathetic as it did have legitimate heart in it. The problem was this trainwreck that tried to follow up on it. I think one of previous posts got it right -- Whitley can't even write his own OCs properly.

Make an extra issue, focusing on Cadance and Hope escaping the Umbrum and Twilight and her friends actively trying to get an upperhand against Sombra, who gets his own pages, contemplating what he is going to do soon, showcasing there might be a bit of remorse as he is aware of the kind of looks Hope gives him. then it ends pretty much like the original third issue with Sombra releasing the Umbrum

5. Final issue: Sombra obviously on the verge of either going full villain again or redemption. On one hoof the Umbrum want him to be their emperor, on the other Hope, who the Umbrum are considering to actually execute and who feels bad for herself and Sombra, seems to keep him at bay. Then attack on the Umbrum. Only this time it is not the mane 6 and ponies form Ponyville, but Celestia and Luna with their soldiers.
Pseudo epic battle during which the mane 6 and Cadance are freed and Hope actually tries herself to stop the Umbrum by reactivating the Crystal Heart, only for Rabia to wound her. Sombra then snaps and saves Hope, and actually asks Cadance and Twilight for help for what he is going to do now. Mainly reactivating the Crystal Heart, in doing so also muttering something about wanting to fix the mistakes Hope and he made.
Umbrum are banished and Sombra actually passes away. Not "reborn" as a pony. He dies.
He turns into dust in front of Hope, apologizing to her and the others for having caused so much suffering, yada yada and is gone for good.
Hope gets arreted for high treason, which she accepts as her punishment, the only solace she has being that Sombra actually died not as a monster, but as a good guy. Throw in soem hints that one day he may come back and that is it.

See, my main issue with the Sombra redemption here is the following: If they want to redeem him, fine. But let him EARN his happy ending, don't shove it in.

The reason I mention that was because of Princess Amore. They make a big deal with her being turned to crystal then shattered, but then isn't mentioned again until this arc and both Cadance and Twi don't seem to care about finding her again at the end of the Fiendship issue. It seemed odd to bring that up then do nothing with it.

Now at the end of this arc both Sombra and Hope are going to reform her, which I am sure will be it's own arc too somehow.

So Amore was the setup for a possible future arc. And now this hatred thing might be used for something else in the future.

That is also an idea.

I just think the four major issues of the arc are as followed:

1. The villains in the team up don't do shit or rather ar enot relevant. Chrysalis as a villain who would want to attack the empire if asked by the right pony sounds kinda legit, because she has a bone to pick with Twilight, Cadance and Shining in show and IDW comic universe. But the others? there is a difference between being a jerk and commiting high treason.

2. As pointe dout by everyone, Hope never gets any comeuppances for what she does. You can argue she got tricked by the Umbrum who went for her own insecurities and childish believes, but that excuses just as much as possible. Her problem is that she never tries to actively redeem herself or just admits that she has also done wrong. Nor does anyone else really, not even the true villains of the story, call her out on her own naivete.
I am not saying she needs to be beaten up badly or has to suffer, but she should go through consequences for her actions. As such my idea about a minr nervous breakdown when she realizes what she did, how she made her former people (the Crystal Ponies) suffer and perhaps even question her own faith in Sombra more.

4. Sombra's redemption. The problem here is, Sombra is a villain who enjoys being evil. He enjoyed it for a long time actually. If he is going to change his mind out of sudden, shouldn't it be because he actually has a certain period of time to think about where to go, even contemplating if he wants to change or not? And if he saves the day, it doesn't change his past deeds. As much as I would love him and Hope together, him dying in a sincere moment of remorse sounds at least to me like a better alternative than that he suddenly becomes a "real pony" as if he is Pinochio, with a character design taken from the Reflection arc.

With all the hate Geoffrey got, I thought I was the only one who kind of liked him too. He seemed close to getting his own redemption as well. Too bad we also lost Scourge and Shard too. But it was a necessary thing to get Penders to fuck off. There was also just too much BS in the lore that it was confusing.

Now the MLP comic needs a reboot cause there are too many inconsistencies with the show and not enough boundaries to keep the writers in line. Now we have writers shoving their own agendas into stories and just bad fanfic tier writing that only serves to inflate the egos of those bad writers because they think they are better than the show. I wonder how long before the MLP comic gets its own "Crying Sonic" issue that makes Hasbro step in.
