Who musician here.
The horse fandom is always full of music.

Do you make pony related stuff?

If you aren't a musician, would you like to be if you had the resources or talent?

Curious.

Been playing since I was ~12. Also been in several orchestras, but only played as a hobby. Never went professional, unless you count occasional weddings and stuff.

It was a decent intermediate horn and it served its purpose. I mean, I've had it for 10 years, and it's been through high school marching band and jazz band. It was good enough for what I needed it for, the only real problem with it up until now, was the trigger. I've had issues with it since I first got it. Loose mechanisms, broken spring, screws came out, you name it.

I was trying to be a pianist, but, well, the painis in my hands ripped me apart, making me unable to really spread my fingers to hit certain notes. Right now I'm trying my hand at a Cello when I can get it, because I feel the woodstringed instruments with bows are more easier to control than, well, let's say a guitar. I legitomately tried with a guitar.
And failed miserably all due to the stringing and such, along with such rapid movements.

Former trombonist and current pianist here. Although I am still very much an amateur as I do not practice theory or playing as much as I used to. Also I produce more than play now. Anyway I did not know so many nor/mlp/eople here were into music. I guess we can blame the fact that other than "/mlp/ plays" and wootmaster's threads there isn't an incredible amount of discussion on the topic here.

But I'll jump in the thread. I don't have any current pics of my instruments but ill just post my battlestation since it is where I get my work done. Though I am still not as talented as many of you seem to be. I'm honestly impressed.

I've been writing music for around 16 years (I'm currently 29), was a percussionist for about 9 years growing up (4th grade through my senior year of High School), and though I took piano lessons while I was much younger I only really wound up retaining just enough of the basics to suit my needs as a composer. I had always written music as a hobby (started out when I was 13 just writing shitty MIDI files), but only within the past few years did I start to get a bit more serious about it.

I typically wind up being inspired by whatever I'm currently into at the time, so at first my YouTube channel was primarily World of Warcraft remixes. Later on, I started writing a whole bunch of music based on League of Legends (back when the game was still new), which has comprised the majority of my work for the past few years.

https://www.youtube.com/vedrim

That fan music, largely thanks to a few features on Riot's Summoner Showcases most likely, eventually led to an offer from Riot to score a fan-made animated short they were funding that they needed music for (this was before they had a small army of in-house composers), which you can check out here:

https://youtu.be/gb6NI0AQ7k0

Since then I've been working as a freelance composer and sound designer with just over four years of experience in the hospitality industry as a night auditor serving as my between-projects fallback option. As all the projects have been full buyouts and for contractual terms I can't disclose, I can't discuss specifically what I worked on until I establish a proper online portfolio/website, which I am never able to finish as stuff keeps coming up.

As far as pone music goes, though I've been on the ride since mid-2011 I never really got into the music side of the fandom. This is largely because I quickly discovered that the whole thing was a massive circlejerk between EqD's pre-listeners (who at times were often featured musicians themselves) and the popular artists at the time, and if you weren't part of said circlejerk then none of your stuff would get posted.

However, I did arrange an orchestrated version of "Giddy Up" for our 4CC team, which is currently used in place of the original anthem during the knockouts if we make it.

https://youtu.be/UBptRVQ8qoE

The only other thing I've really done related to pone is this an unfinished instrumental big band cover of "Anthropology", which I still work on on rare occasions: http://www.mediafire.com/?9j892hbs4dhch1d

Speaking of the 4CC, This was written specifically for the cup, though I only wound up using it for a few videos for the Winter 2014 and Summer 2015 Round of 16. Also, apparently a fairly popular hearthstone YouTuber named Trolden uses this in his videos occasionally (as I only found out thanks to comments on the video), so you might have heard it there if you watch his stuff:

https://youtu.be/NhnFUIBigv4

I've also done a whole bunch of random remixes and stuff for the 4CC, which you can find on my wiki userpage if you'd like (http://implyingrigged.info/wiki/User:Ved). I'm particularly proud of this one, which took me like two weeks straight of 8 to 10 hours per day last year due to the ridiculous amount of mixing/sampling/editing that needed to be done (I was doing contract work, so I had plenty of free time):

That genre alone should teach you all the basics of music production (EQing, applying compression/limiters, working with varying time signatures, etc).

I eventually got over the depression by getting the fuck over it and growing up, and just recently (within the last 2 months) started playing games again. I keep telling myself I should start practicing again, but I'm still as much of a procrastinator as I've always been.

And now I'm regretful that I haven't made any use of Bloodborne music. Which is terrible of me, cause I love the macabre themed orchestral stuff.

As for recording my playings, I wouldn't say I was good enough for it back then, and especially not now. I played as a hobby, nothing serious.

Oh my god, if I see one more post saying this!
If anything, I'm happy the fandom is "shrinking" or whatever because now it's less of the massive circle jerk it was when mlp was getting really popular.

There's still a ton of people who like the show, and they actually like the show for the show. Unlike how there were a ton of people a few years ago who just jumped on the bandwagon to get horsefamous or because mlp was popular at the time.

If anything, having a smaller community now is way better. Smaller communities are way cozier, you get to feel more like a tight knit family, as gay as that sounds.

Plus you can produce pony content--like music-- for fun, instead of feeling like you should worry about making something for horsefame. :3
So let's make some music and have fun, anon!

I have zero musical skill or knowledge. I don't ever get ideas for songwriting as much as I do for my other artistic ideas like literature, filmmaking, graphic design, etc.

Though I do get great ideas for music videos whenever I'm listening to music, so I'd feel that's where I shine.

If I had the talent and resources, I'd love to make ska punk or skacore music. That's my shieet, homi. But the genre is resource HEAVY. The music needs guitar, bass, drums, and brass on top of that, like trumpet, trombone, saxes. Most ska punk bands are 7-piece.

JCarlson is a particular member of the fandom sho pushes out amazing work. The dude is funny too. He has a YT and a Soundcloud.

Keep trying though, keep getting creative and learn how to create an ambiance. Learn mastering and music theory in general, even just the basics help a lot. Find a band to play with.

Eh, life's been pretty neutral for me. On one hand I'm doing all the recording/producing for the pony rock band I'm in, The Wonderbolts. We've just about finished tracking parts for our cover of This Day Aria and then I gotta mix it all into something listenable, which is fun in a painful sort of way.

On the rap side I'm cooking up beats and song subjects to compile into songs and then albums. The most recent idea I had was sampling David Bowie's "Fame", putting a boom bap beat to it and calling it "Horse Fame". Then I'll spit hot fire about 100 dollar skype calls and stuff.

I figure since I have so many varied ideas but I still want to do a tight concept album (The Hiatus) I should just come out with mixtapes that handle the lesser topics over the hiatus while building up to the big one. Also I'm still working on the rap over that instrumental to quills and sofas you gave me
>>
>>25657970
Sounds great man, I love your rap stuff.

It's actually REALLY funny that you bring up that Quills and Sofas rap, because a few months ago I got this crazy idea to make a rap opera about Davenport called Slumdog Quillionaire (if anyone steals that title from me I will fucking find you and end you). I'll post a chunk of the WIP because I'm 99% sure I'll never actually get around to finishing it.

Eventually I'll get to lyrics. It's basically going to be an off the wall fanfic in rap form. But I really underestimated the time it takes to write a good rap. Just the density of lyrics is mind boggling. A six minute rap will have like five times more words than what I'm used to writing.

Oh snap, THIS HERE BOY THINKS HE GON WRITE A RAP SONG OOOHHHWEEEEEEE

But no seriously it is tough. To be honest, I always thought of singers in other genres as having it a little easy. At its simplest you can condense a whole narrative down to a few carefully chosen lines and sing it real pretty-like. The music does most of the work.

Not in rap homeskillet. YOU NEED SYLLABLES MY MATEY. THERE'S NO CHEESIN' IT.

Unless the beat is a club banger. Then you can literally say anything and sound good.
>>
>>25658630
I think specifically lyricists in most other genres have it easier. Singing real pretty-like is harder than it seems if you don't want to abuse pitch-correction. But that last part is totally lost on most pony vocalists.

But yeah the genre us totally new for me and has different challenges that I'm not used to. So if I ever DO release it, it'll take a looong time.

The main reason I starting listening to your jams is because you sung the most pretty-like of anyone I'd ever heard in the fandom.

And honestly, I WISH more of these other fools used pitch correction. Many a good pony rock song has been ruined by abysmal vocals.

I think the best vocalists right now are you, that fool Luna Jax, Cherax, and Plum Creek Rhythm section. I know I'm missing a few but I can't think of 'em right now.

I know this is a music thread, but if I may circlejerk slightly off-topic for a second I just wanted to say that I'm a huge fan of your artwork.

Anyway, banjos (and folk in general) is pretty much the fucking best. I've always wished I could play guitar or violin since most VST instruments geared towards the genre are aren't quite as advanced as those geared towards more traditional scoring in terms of providing both sound quality, expression, and playability. Hasn't stopped me from trying to do the best I can with what I've got, though; maybe I'll post some unfinished concepts later after work.
>>
>>25660715
Aww shit, Ved sempai n-noticed me? Th-thanks man.

>I've always wished I could play guitar or violin
Dude, just find a guitarist or something. No insult to them, but literally everybody and their mother plays guitar. I'm sure you can find some long-haired Blind Guardian wannabe to lay down some licks for you.
>>
>>25660660
One of the main reasons is that I don't think my songs are good enough. A lot of people, including many of the fandom's more popular musicians, have been complaining that all the fan music sucks now and that you have to sort through a bunch of shit to find decent songs, which is pretty discouraging for new and unpopular musicians in the fandom from sharing their work, myself included. I don't want to share stuff that people might think sucks. So I want to improve before I am comfortable showing my work to people.
>>
>>25660798
I can understand that. But honestly?

Fuck anyone who says pony fan music sucks now. Have you listened to anybody that WASN'T Alex S from 2011? The mixes were absolute trash. The nostalgia-effect masks the fact that a lot of crap that came out back then was simple Playskool keyboard bullshit with pony names slapped onto it.

The 'sort through the shit to find the good' rule was always in affect, this is nothing new. What's actually happening is that nobody is looking for new music and new people are discouraged because they're afraid they won't stack up to the legacy of a 'popular' fandom musician who probably doesn't even give a fuck about ponies anymore.

In order to improve you have to get shit out there first. I fucked around back in the day too. Look at this shit.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXK7LxqEG28

This is literally worst thing I've ever done. But I put it out there and learned from it. Kudos to you if you can mess around and learn without releasing anything, but I find that first you have to take that first step of publishing something absolutely shit before you can improve.

Don't be afraid to suck ass at first. You will. But the sooner you get through that, the sooner you'll get better.

On the topic of music. Balloon Party is coming back with a 2016 release. I'm real pumped to see what they have in store.
>>
>>25663796
The upcoming Balloon Party album is run by a couple of shitheads who openly dis the fandom and their own fans constantly, and are using this new one to make money off of and promote themselves. It's really fucking shitty.

Shitheads in charge are making the album significantly less pony related and are advertising this as an IMPROVEMENT to the Balloon Party series.

The folks in charge are even calling this album THEIR album instead of an album that's a group effort by the many many musicians actually making the songs for it. They also admitted that this album will be intentionally less pony related to reach a wider audience, but still slightly pony related in order cash in on the fandom still. Lot's of the musicians were complaining that they like the album being pony related and if they guys in charge didn't like that then they could just make their own separate album and do whatever they want, and the dicks in charge don't care.

One of the people in charge of this album has even said that he is using the fandom as launchpad for his career and just exploits the fandom to make money off of them.

That being said, I have confidence in the musicians in the fandom to make great songs for this upcoming album.

Aw shiieeet, thanks man. Also, I wanted to ask you something.

You do some pretty excellent 80's style pone jams, and in this thread you showed you had a DX7 and other cool synths. Do you ever record your hardware synths for music, or is it all VSTs?
>>
>>25671614 Fuck it, before I go to sleep, have some random slap bass riffs.
The timing's probably fucked, as I have no metronome, but oh well. http://vocaroo.com/i/s18IJMGIbfM1

Unleash the Magic was a mix of hardware and VST. I have a track coming out soon that is mostly hardware, and I released a song that solely uses the DX7 a few days ago.

I don't think I've ever heard something that sounds like the fast stuff at 47 second before. Maybe because there's no distortion. Sounds dope
