It's funny when we talk about Toei adaptations of Go Nagai's concepts, we never talk about the actual director, Tomoharu Katsumata. He directed thr entire Mazinger trilogy, Devilman, Cutie Honey, Gaiking etc as well as some Captain Harlock and Yamato movies and lot more.
He's a Toei mecha heavyweight legend comparable to the likes of Tomino and Kawamori.

Partly because there's not a whole lot to talk about. The Toei staff who did the heavy lifting with the DP-Toei collaborations don't put themselves out as a personality like Nagai or Tomino.

Considering Nagai didn't have much to do with the anime other designing monsters, it's more reasonable to bring Katsumata up instead of Nagai.

Dude literally never directs anything on his own and all his works are generally terrible.

No, but his name is associated with Macross, which is pretty big.
