I would watch movies and things and had a very clear sense about not crossing the line, about what I could do and shouldn’t do. To make sure the police would never show up at my door.

A lot of manga are more popular than their TV versions, though. Sometimes the TV series is very short live while the manga continues for decades. Not the case of Nagai, though. In his case, TV is always an improvement over his half-assed manga.

How do you know he doesn't? Many parts of a mangaka's life can remain secret. There's some mangaka whose gender is unknown. I've only seen one reference to Ken Ishikawa's daughter and wife ever.
