***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

I got an action base 2 yesterday and tried putting my RG Destiny Gundam on it using the connector, but it's way too loose. is it supposed to be like that or am I doing something wrong? The slightest touch on the gundam and it already disconnects from the base.
>>
>>15848476
You could always use the included connectors

I can't decide on which lower leg to go with. The right one is how I've had it, but it always looked slapped together to me. The left is my idea for a revision, but I'm not entirely sure how I feel about it
>>
>>15848577
If you go with that, you would likely need to bulk up the waist.
>>
>>15848577
the one on the right (left leg) looks better imo
>>
>>15848577
Most of the Vidar's parts are pretty angled, while the part you're trying to add on the robot's right leg is very rounded. It doesn't fit at all if you ask me, unless you do something to introduce a rounded theme in multiple parts of the design.

I suppose, ranged was really looking more for stuff like snipers/artillery but I guess you can argue that funnels/bits are long range enough

Newfag here, I'm considering buying either an HG Jegan or a Kampfer as my first kit. Which one is overall better? Any other kits I should consider? The only requisite is that I'd rather buy MSs without skirts or at most small ones, I don't like how they look.

if you are really concerned about which is better look for a quick review on the kits.

I have what might be a dumb question. I'm trying to handpaint, and I'm not sure what order the steps are in. The guide says:

Sand-> Prime -> Lacquer -> Gloss Coat -> Enamel or acrylic -> Details* -> Top coat
I'm using acrylic paint, so I can skip the lacquer, right? Does that mean I put a gloss coat on the primer and then paint the gloss coat? What's the point of that?

I forgot to check the guide while I was painting, so I went
Prime -> Acrylic -> Gloss floor cleaner -> Matte spray

It looks okay, but I'm not sure if the problems are because I did the wrong order or if it's because it's my first time painting.
>>
>>15850445
>Does that mean I put a gloss coat on the primer and then paint the gloss coat? What's the point of that?

Paint a gloss coat? you mean spraying it gloss and then using something like future brushed on?
You don't need to brush on future after spraying a glosscoat. It's pretty chunky, and while a lot of people swear by it, i don't recommend it.

You can go
Sand>prime>[paint>gloss] repeat until all colors are done>gloss>decals>final topcoat (whatever finish you want)

Ideally it's always better to post pics of what you did too.
>>
Anyone else dumb enough to fall for this fucking chara base bullshit? They don't fucking work, the stand doesn't fucking clip into the base. What the fuck am I missing because this design is fucking broken.

>>
>>15850387
I like red and gold for that reson a paint it in that color and also a I'm not a professional
>>
>>15850488
The actual build is incredibly simple, it's all of like 5 parts. The arm then slots into the character base. The problem is that the way the base is physically designed there is no relief for the arm to slot in. So instead you have to ram it in there and it leaves the base all gaped up and is prone to getting knocked out of the base at which point your kit goes tumbling to the fucking floor. Who thought this was a good idea?
>>

I might be mistaken on what a gloss coat is. I thought applying Future with a brush was the gloss coat. I sprayed the part I wanted to paint with some spray primer, handpainted with acrylic, handpainted over that with Future, then sprayed that with a matte spray. I didn't see the point of painting gloss then spraying matte, but I really thought I read that somewhere.

I'm trying to figure out what the guide means in its step order. It looks like it wants me to spray primer, handpaint over that with Future, handpaint over that with my acrylic paint, then spray it with a matte spray, but that doesn't make sense.

>>
>>15850486
I'm talking about using a glosscoat specifially for hobby stuff. The walmart stuff is gonna be too thick.

You need to gloss each layer to seal in the paint you just sprayed on. You also have to use gloss too since it's smooth and won't create bumps and shit. Gloss also makes it easier to put decals and panel line. If you mattecoat/semi inbetween layers, that shit is slightly bumpier, and multiple layers of that bumpy shit will lead to a mess.

>>15850499
Future i a gloss, but I'd consider it a final gloss, since it's so chunky and thick. I suppose you might be able to thin it, but I always hear people say to not thin future as a coat.

You should not prime > future > paint colors, that's a really weird order to work, and you don't need to seal in the basecoat. You use the basecoat to let the first layer of paint stick to.

Your problem is you don't have a design goal so you have no idea which is the correct part to use after trying different things.

Set a design goal, make some decisions on what direction you want to take your kitbash and you'll begin finding answers.

As it stands now, you've just been asking people to decide how your kitbash is going to look which as you admit, is annoying.

I'm not so much trying to kit bash as I want to correct what I see as a design mistake. The issue I'm having is that I don't know what the designer had in mind while creating it, and I don't want what I to look bad. Ideally my goal is to keep the lineage of the Kimaris, which have hefty lower legs, but coming across parts in 1/100 isn't the cheapest thing (on top of unused parts driving me nuts)

The gloss is intended for when you're panel lining or putting decals on. It gives a totally smooth surface so there's no silvering for the waterslides, and so the paint doesn't bleed for panel lining.
If you're doing neither of them then a gloss coat isn't exactly necessary.
My steps for handpainting kits is prime > paint acrylic > gloss > panel wash & decals > matte.

My reach exceeds my grasp, Anon. I'm a realist, here. I don't know the techniques, nor do I have the money to buy new stuff yet. Yet.

This build idea involves lacquer paints, decals, custom details, and color matching, all of which I have no experience with and want to practice first, and I need to figure out a better lighting and camera set up for this idea.

And most importantly I don't have the money for these things as my computer is in the shop being repaired and I spent far too much money at a convention last month.

To clarify, "Ranged" means primarily gun-focused. Snipers and Artillery are the immediate examples, but something loaded with micromissiles or some huge-ass chaingun are perfectly fine. If it's got a fuckhuge cannon then that's ranged enough for me.

Basically it's "throw as many guns as you can on something and send it out" whereas Melee was "find the biggest sword/axe you had lying around and throw that on a MS". Or as /tg/ would call it, it needs more dakka

If the issue was with money then I can understand that.

But you're over-thinking things, anon, especially with the lacquers. You don't need lacquers, when you can use acrylics.

True, but completely re-painting a kit in an opposite factions' colors still sets a particular bar for ENTRY in the first place, something that is entirely counter to the point of getting people to make new gunpla that the group builds try to encourage.

Civilian is a bit better, but there is still very little stock support for non-combat Gunpla.

I build the inner frame then gloss it, gloss all the armor runners, assemble the glossed pieces, then panel wash the armor while it's on the kit, and then matte coat the final product.

That's why you take apart the entire section. You're right to be worried, but if you don't do the full assembly first you won't see how some parts come together, and you may have some bad spots from where the nubs were when you gloss coated.
If you do the panel washes while you have the whole section dismantled there's no concern with getting anything on the inner frame. As well, you can avoid weird parts fit issues that you might run into by just glossing everything.

Even a "Simple" paint job can be daunting, mostly because people will either want to start hand-painting (which doesn't really get good results on large surfaces and thus gets ridiculed) or use Canned Spray Paint (which can be very hazardous if you don't know what you're doing).

...Most of the elitist here will shit on you if you didn't spend a couple hundred on an Airbrush.
>>
>>15852624
>Canned Spray Paint (which can be very hazardous if you don't know what you're doing).
Use Krylon. It works perfectly fine. Make sure you shake it, keep the nozzle clean, and warm the can so the paint sprays better. Just don't huff the fumes.
>...Most of the elitist here will shit on you if you didn't spend a couple hundred on an Airbrush
Yeah no. An Iwata Neo will run you $50, a cheap hardware store compressor is like $20, all you need after that is paint and cleaner and you can finish under $100. You should get a cheap mask for acrylic, but you don't need anything else.

Normally I would ignore you idiots, but not when you spread anti-paint propaganda. Painting is fun, you should try it.

>>
>>15852705
I will look into that, thank you. I'm glad I asked before using it, though I was going to test with a spoon first.
>>
>>15852693
It's a spectacular beginner airbrush and does everything you should need for plamo. The needle is lower quality than the more expensive Eclipse needle, but don't drop your airbrush and be careful with your needle while cleaning and it will last. My friend that got me into airbrushing has been using his Neo every week for 2 years and hasn't had to replace anything.
>>
>>15852624
I spent literally 40 bucks on a cheapo airbrush and work with acrylics and it's worked fine for me for the 6 kits I've fully painted so far, it might seem daunting but painting really isn't that scary once you start doing it. As for spray cans as long as you look up their proper use they work great too. I used them a ton when doing regular scale models a long time ago. It's really fun, I'd recommend anyone who wants to start painting to go for it, get a cheapo kit or practice on plastic spoons until you're confident and you should be fine!
>>
>>15852579
>moblie suits are HUGE
Balls are 12.8 meters in height and were literally just construction pods retrofitted with cannons. 12.8 meters is basically the same height of a mobile suit if you remove the legs, or just a few meters smaller than late UC suits. It's not inconceivable that the Feds could gut older MS's of their weapon systems and downgrade their powerplants, then sell them off to local colonial governments as space-type equipment.

If I cut close to the piece (using gundam planet nippers) occasionally I get stress marks that are hard to remove. If I try to remove too much nub with an xacto, I still get stress marks or minor cuts into the plastic.

If I cut far from the piece, then cut again, I still get stress marks, what is the point of this?

If I sand, it scuffs the plastic. Even with 2500 grade paper.

Top coating will not help the nubs. Sanding and painting is preferable.

Cut further from the piece and slowly nip down until you're almost there but not quite. Start sanding. If the stress marks appear rub the mark with your finger nail. For some reason this helps but it won't remove the marks entirely.
