I think the biggest ass pull in the show is that no one on McGillis' side seemed to have anticipated Rustal using Dainsleif during the fight. He and Iok had literally emptied the Dainsleif warehouse before the coup d'etat attempt, but neither McGillis nor Orga seemed to have been terribly concerned about that fact, knowing what kind of person they're dealing with.

We was being written with an attempt to make him a cunning bastard. With S2 entire direction changed where he was portrayed as a fanatic. Mind you the entire Calamity War scenario also changed between the seasons. The Agnika concept probably didn't even exist by the time S1 was airing. McGillis' VA also stated what happened in the end with McGillis was something entirely different from what he'd been told would happen. Bottom line is it's been stated that due to Gelio being alive McGillis could not have been written as a cunning bastard anymore.
