>pilot unable to properly control robot at first
>robots that toe the line between machine and living creature
>subversive use of religious imagery to add sense of doom
>fiery female companions who don't measure up in the end
>scenes depicting civilian casualties
Could someone remind me again what there ever was to deconstruct about the super robot genre?
"Deconstruction" is a word people use when they want to sound intelligent. It has almost no meaning in relation to anime.

There never was. Eva isn't even a deconstruction, it's Anno having fun with elements of previous shows and then breaking down during production, which while not tradition is what Tomino is kinda famous for. Eva is actually a straight a shooter as a mecha show gets.

>then breaking down during production
Can you explain what you mean? Like mentally breaking down or just emphasizing certain aspects of the production?
And yeah, I agree that Eva is really only famous because it's millennial's first mecha; not to mention Anno's take on child psychology is in-line with what was popular in culture at the time.
That's not to say its a bad anime or that i hate Anno. I do enjoy several aspects of the show.

Not him but Anno went through some pretty bad depression during Eva's creation and it was kind of a boiling point by the end.
