Will this shot lancer shoot beams or shells? Are there any perks to using one or the other?

Beams have more penetration than solid projectiles, which is both an asset and a detriment. It's good, because it's much harder to armor against them. It's bad, because it's much easier to cause collateral damage with them. That's why shot lancers were invented in the first place, to have a weapon that can punch through armor but not too far.

Yeah I was considering that also. I thought shot lancers were only designed to prevent reactor explosions until I saw a Zoloat get stabbed with one and blow up desu.

There's regular explosion and then there's turbo critical explosion.
Check Gundam Unicorn. That ReZEL that was lying on its back and got funneled. It turbo explodes instead of regular explodes. They even make a huge scene about it.
