I was on /v/ in a Power Ranger thread and someone suggested that I watch W/Double as my first rider.

W is still one of my all-time favorite series. A lot of work went into it, and it shows. Even the spin-offs were great! There's a lot of little things: For instance, in the movie with Eternal, there's a part where Accel throws away the Engine Blade when he goes Trial. The Engine Blade actually 'shatters' the stone is smashes into.

Also, Shotaro never manages to best Katsumi in hand-to-hand combat, because obviously the trained mercenary with super-strength is a much better fighter. This movie was tightly-plotted in a way few other Kamen Rider movies were - it's very, very rare to have a film which doesn't run on 'just because' and 'eh, let's go with that'.

This is an interesting statement, but I don't think it ever came out on any of the television shows during Ishinomori's lifetime. When it comes to actual series-accuracy then they are spot-on, especially Skull and Double, when you compare the new Figuart to the original it's amazing what we were satisfied with for all these years, like those janky shoulder pads. Same with the molding on Rider 1's armor plate, it almost looks like the real material (unfortunately those are the wrong antenna)

I was following some Power Rangers pages on Facebook and I happened to look at a few pictures of OOO (it was currently airing, latest episode was one or two episodes after TaJaDoru debut).

I was going through my final exams in order to graduate from middle school. Saw all ~21 episodes in a few days without giving a crap about studying. I was waking up and was watching 2-3 episodes of OOO. Then I was going to school and when I was coming back, I'd watch a couple more.

I later decided to give a chance to SS by starting watching the newest season, Gokaiger.

Been meaning to get on the 00s and finishing Showa for ages now, I marathoned practically all of Sentai that had been subbed at the end of last year and meant to move onto Rider after that but real life hit hard. Here's hoping I'll have everything under my belt by the time Heisei finally ends.

Haven't touched the adaptations either, even after powering through all of Power Rangers last year.

Watched lots of anime, eventually watched G Gundam because of the heavy memes and ended up really enjoying it. Got pretty hard into super robots. Sort 0f the moment where I learned to appreciatw the cheese. Then my friend, one of you, force fed me W and some other sentai shit. Started watching Dairanger shortly after and got stuck in the loop of endlessly watching anything toku.

Always enjoyed film special effects and I feel Rider and sentai really captures that movie magic that seems so lost in cinema these days.

Tldr went from ironically enjoying toku to unironically enjoying it

I don't think that works for most Riders. Up to X, it's fine (water bug), but then you get Stronger's electric powers which are completely unrelated to a rhinoceros beetle, and from there things rarely match even in the Showa era.

Skyrider is a locust, so it works, but Super-1 is a hornet, which doesn't match anything he does - even though they easily could have given him a hand change with a sting attack. ZX is a longhorn beetle, but it's mostly just that spot pattern on his armor and has nothing to do with his abilities.

Koyomi could've literally been replaced by a cardboard cutout and nothing would've changed, Kiriko's special combat shoes were useless against even unevolved Roidmudes, and the only invention Akari actually made was basically given to her by Edith and made completely pointless by the Spider Lantern like 3 episodes later.

Nico was the only RidePlayer to beat a Bugster and it's thanks to her they got around half the Gashatrophies necessary to end Chronicle, and while Poppy may not have done much combatwise she revived Kuroto and got him working with CR, and cured everyone infected by Gamedeus' virus.
