New here, what does /m/ think of this movie? Do people here like the blu ray?

Pretty good except for the bits where Wheelie opens his mouth.

One of my favorite 80s cartoon movies. Story is dumb but it's so fast paced and good looking that I don't really care. And that new Blu-ray is fucking gorgeous.

I like it. Still surprised they got Orson Welles for it.

Is this the one where the language odd pretty tame then either Bumblebee or Hot Rod suddenly yells "Oh shit!" during a space battle sequence?

I'm more so surprised that Leonard Nimoy was Galvatron. With Judd Nelson (Breakfast Club and New Jack City) being Hot Rod
>>
>>15808134
Apparently Nimoy also helped with Unicron's dialogue. Orson Wells was sick at the time and didn't give a fuck to begin with and therefore gave a very bad performance. Interviews with the production staff have hinted (but never actually confirmed) that they not only heavily altered Wells's voice in some parts also got Nimoy to read Unicron's lines and mixed them with Wells's readings in some parts.

If I remember correctly, it was to deliberately force a PG rating over a G. PG films got more showings at better times than Gs.
>>
I dont have the blue ray but i remember buying the dvd back in 2007. I was a Huge Fan of transformers amarda wich aired at this time in germany and the dvd had amarda prime woth some cool spacebattle scenes in the background and the caption was from the upcoming movie. No idea why they made it that way in germany tho.
>>
It was odd that the movie never explained where the fuck the Aerialbots, Predacons or Stunticons were. They were all established in G1 before this movie.....why the fuck were they not in the movie, or even fucking mentioned????
>>
>>15808170
He was originally drawn and quartered by the Sweeps, but execs thought it was too gruesome so he just exploded into pieces.
>>
>>15808185
Could it be down to the toy trends at the time? Maybe the Scramble City-type combiner toys weren't selling all too well. Although, correct me if I'm wrong, the Predacons weren't introduced until post movie, which also added the Terrorcons and Technobots, so I guess that couldn't have been the case.

Maybe there just wasn't room after the new characters and the most iconic/favourite of the old ones.
>>
>>15808172
It also meant that parents had to accompany their kids to the theater, that way they'd know what toys to buy their tikes.

>>
>>15808185
>>15808208
The movie began production in1985 meaning that when they were first writing the movie the combiner team characters didn't exist, which is why Devastator is presented as the end all be all Decepticon force of destruction because, at the time of writing, he was. That said, toy trends did still play a big part in the movie's production. The majority of the 1984 cast was killed off because their toys were not still selling, this is also why characters like Bumblebee and Soundwave survived because their toys were popular enough to still be on the shelves

I can see it.

But I'm pretty sure he animated some of the music sequences, you know, The Touch and and Dare. Everybody knows that Urushihara is at his best drawing Bush.

I actual find it amusing, remembering the type of shit Ironhide went through during the first Generation, only to be one-shot by Starscream in the opening scene. I was bitterly disappointed that Hound, my favourite character from Gen 1 didn't even have a death scene, you just saw his and wheeljack's dead bodies lying on the way side as Hot Rod, Arcee and Springer passed by.

That was Wheeljack and Windcharger in the autobot bunker.
Hound was present when Optimus Prime landed on Autobot City. Surprisingly with Sunstreaker even though both Hound & Streaker was at the Roadblock with Kup earlier.

>>
>>15809829
I heard it's bad. Widescreen even though the movie was made for the 4:3 ratio, that sort of thing. I'd rather watch standard definition than be missing 25% of the picture at all times, personally.
>>
>>15811452
4 foot by 2 foot concept art?! Floro Dery was a god among men
>>
>>15811473
It actually looks like an upgrade for megatron. Working in purple in the design really makes him look like royalty in the decepticon ranks (even with the quasi-crown head design). His alt mode works with all the other new characters and their homeworld cybertronian alt modes. OHKO'ing Starscream with his cannon alt mode was great for a visual proof of his strength.
>>
>>15811452
That would've been cool to see. Hopefully someone eventually uses the design.
>>
Currently going through Season 2 of G1. Which are your favorite episodes? Which are skippable?

>I heard it's bad. Widescreen even though the movie was made for the 4:3 ratio, that sort of thing. I'd rather watch standard definition than be missing 25% of the picture at all times, personally.
I can't speak for TF but a lot of those actually cropped the 4:3 to make it widescreen in the theater and then the home video got the "full" image. off the top of my head I think Shock Treatment did that for their "TV" scenes at least
>>
>>15808186
With so many re-release of this movie I still wish they would add the deleted scenes like how uncut editions does or how some Gundam movies with additional animation.

I guess they were or lazy or find it costly (the latter is probable) to make this.
>>
>>15811816
Personally Seaon 2 is the best out off all 4 G1 seasons. Out of Season 2 I loved:
Autobot Spike (Fun fact Beast Wars writers wanted Rampage/Protoform X to use discarded G1 parts for his body from the Ark just like G1 Autobot X)
Traitor
Enter the Nightbird
The Master Builders (Prime slam-dunking a basketball never gets old)
Auto Berserk (Crazy Red Alert is best)
The Golden Lagoon (Ending is depicted as a "Bad Ending" but with heroic victory music)
The Gambler (Smokescreen lies, cheat and steal as a Good Guy)
Sea Change (Prototype KISS Player)
Triple Takeover (Bltizwing using a Football coach as a military advisor)
Auto-Bop (Blaster vs Soundwave goodness in a club)
The Girl Who Loved Powerglide (proto-KISS Player ep 2)
The Key to Vector Sigma, Part 1 & 2 (stunticons and arielbots)
War Dawn (Orion Pax origin story plus time travel)
Cosmic Rust (Personally believe the autobots outdid GI Joe in protect the statue of liberty)
Starscream's Brigade
The Revenge of Bruticus
>>
>>15811855

I don't know, I felt like the tone in season 1 was a bit better. I'm still just halfway through, at Desertion of the Autobots, but most episodes are just full on 80s cheese, not different from all the other toy commercial cartoons from the era. It's fun, but it's also pretty samey and safe.

The first season, especially the first few episodes, had a better overall "war" feel to it, the action was a bit grittier and the narrative felt a bit more serialized/continuous, almost like a Gundam lite; it set it apart from other cartoons of the time.

Thats how Toei animated all of their feature films at the time. The blu ray comes with the full frame version toi.
>>
>>15812193

You can really see Dery come into his own for the movie. Season 1 he wasn't really the designer, basically just traced Shohei Kohara's character sheets and made some minor alterations, then season 2 he sort of used Kohara's art for inspiration along with greater toy influence. By the movie, it seems like Kohara's 70's super robot style was gone.
