Did anyone here play the J-Phoenix series? They're sorta like Armored Core clones made by Takara, for the PS2. Kunio Okawara was a collaborator.
There's an OVA with cute girls too.

No subs though. Also, wasn't it in a pack-in with the game or something?
I remember it from this MAD:

I thought the scenes were all from a single game, but J-Phoenix actually has 4 games.
One interesting fact is that they released a "trial version" of the two main titles, in CDs. That way, you could play a few missions and know about the story and characters beforehand.
The first three games (J-Phoenix 1, Cobalt and Burst Tactics) all use a lot of stuff from the classic Armored Cores. Even using R2/L2 to move the camera, and R1/L1 to strafe. There are only ground stages.
J-Phoenix 2 tried something new, sorta like Gundam UC Climax. There are space stages now, and there's no boost mechanic anymore.
You can see pretty clearly that the developers played AC to hell and back, because the differences in J-Phoenix are usually things that an AC player would hate: for example, it's much easier to hit with melee weapons, and the turning speed is much faster than in AC. Almost too fast.
