I tried on two separate occasions to get into this series, but I just could not give a damn about what was happening. It's a shame because I really liked the mecha designs.

It's just not for you. Try Twilight Axis. It has char and lalah cameos so you know it's good.

The whole mobile armor arc in s2 is alright but the rest is bad (to say the least).

You have to understand, you're not liking the characters because they're actually the villains of the piece. The heroes only show up late in the season, and S2 is more-or-less about them.

I had the same disconnect, until I realized that Tekkadan consisted entirely of terrible people I couldn't sympathize with.
