For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

== THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

Love this kit to fucking hell and back.
All that texture and detail, great bang for the buck.

In any case I'm done snapping this thing and am already planning to paint this guy in winter camo. Anyone know where I can find a paint template for the Tieren?
I checked the OP's link, but it only got the space Tieren.

Bought it for the Rebake, now I want to build both. I hope whoever came up with the idea of a combined kit gets fired. I think the kit has been a bit of a shelfwarmer.

Zaku MG F2000 resin kit update. All the parts have been painted, but some need decaling. Arms are done though and the mounting points for the weapons fitted. those bits were supposed to be dark grey. but they came out REALLY dark, ah well.
the big verniers have a core piece that will have some PE attached so they're not final yet.

>>
So I have a conundrum
I just got done unpacking all my kits again. After talk about how people aren't really good at building or don't want to improve, i was kind of disgusted with my kits. Disgusted might be to harsh, but they looked disappointing, and I kind of see why people bash kits that look like toys from bare plastic. I guess I've never really done much more than panel lining, yet it feels like I've done so much more, because I've done a lot of airbrushing this past summer and other painting. But when I look at everything, it looks like all I've done was painted one storm trooper and a Graze (but the graze still looks like trash).

I guess the short of it is, what can I do to get better? One of my issues I know of is that I need good topcoats. I've been waiting for USA Gundam Store to get Mr Hobby Gloss in stock, but no luck yet. I'm not really trying to become all that great with custom parts and scribing and whatnot just yet (though custom parts aren't really all that hard, its painting where I fuck up). I'm just trying to figure out what I can do to go beyond panel lining.

Also one more question, I'm looking to put the decal trim on my MG Sinanju, but topcaoting the parts afterwards would mess up the chrome of it, no? Is there a way to get around that, because I much prefer the gold of the decals to gold paints.
>>
>>15777604
If you panel line and put on decals you're already leagues ahead of people like Snapshit.

Is there any reason why you feel you need to use Mr Hobby gloss? If you have a Hobbytown USA or some other hobby shop near you they'll probably have some Tamiya gloss coat you can use.

You could try taking a look at some of the kits you aren't really happy with and bashing two or three together, if you want to try something simple as far as kitbashing goes. That or grab some cheap Wing/Seed 1/144 kit and use that as a test subject for painting. And like >>15777760 said you could post an image of the Graze so we can see what's up with your painting technique.

Out here in Pa it's rare if you come across a hobby shop of any sorts. As of right now, online is my best bet. But I'm just trying to find the best lacquer topcoat I can get after getting burned by Alclad II Klear Kote not living up to my expectations... like being lacquer. I'm a picy person in that I need to have the best quality I can (reasonably) get. I don't like putzing around wasting money till I find the right product, just get it right the first time

Alclad's clear coats are actually enamel based I believe, right?
>>
>>15777947
They are, and I never found anything that mentioned it, and only found out after using it. It's been over a month and some of it still feels a bit tacky
>>
>>15777958

I had the same experience with them, the finish is nice but you can't really movie it as easily. I switched to mr. hobby and like it a lot, although I feel the flat is a little finicky compared to some others. I still like the alclad for tanks because I use oil-based weathering stuff and it somewhat blends that stuff in a really nice way.
>>
>>15777977
Finicky in what way?

>>15777958

I've also used model masters lacquer flat in a jar and that's good stuff if you can't find something else. I thinned it with leveling thinner and it was totally fine. Here's a (kind of shitty) pic of a kit I used it on in January, and it has held up great.
>>
>>15778009

I feel like it is very sensitive to pressure and flow. I've found it hazes somewhat easily if you apply it very lightly, or glosses if you don't have enough air on it. This is both in comparison to other mr. hobby paints and other lacquer flats.
It's certainly nice when you get it right, but it's like alclad chrome where it's a paint you have to "learn" in a way.

On a less important note, I wish it came in bigger bottles.
>>
>>15777820
Pity the photos are a bit grainy, but it's still easy to see the differences. But some decals, lining, and top coat go a VERY long way. Though I'd easily recommend matte top coat unless you're doing a high gloss finish. But adding touch up detail and can make a kit shine, don't have to go crazy with a custom paint job really. I've really found joy in just doing little paint touch ups on kits to add that little bit extra since airbrushing isn't something I really want to make work in such a tight space.

>>15777831
Your only really issue here is the lint on the model, and the nub on the inner frame. It's really more about getting creative with a kit. Like adding parts from other units, weapons, armor, whatever. That's one of the really cool things about IBO in general, is how things can be so easily bashed together.
>>
>>15777831
>>15777847
That Graze doesn't look that bad to be honest, especially if that's one of the first kits you've painted. The only obvious stuff I could see you working on is seam welding (If those boosters on the thighs are constructed the way I think they are) and maybe working on the masking on the red on the head. As for the location thing you might want to try checking if you've got any model train stores. If not you could always just order cans via Amazon. as a last resort.

>>15777896
Nah, that's just the HGUC.
>>
>>15777826
Gunpla are the most affordable mecha model kits on the market
>>
>>15778052
You still pay out the ass to import them, or wait and subject them to more time spent being handled by postal workers, the lowest and least responsible form of life.
>>
>>15778034
The Graze is the 1/100 Ground type, so kitbashing is a bit limited in that scale. But yeah don't gotta tell me about the dust, it was months between painting and topcoating and it just wouldn't come off of the paint. I keep hoping that if I add enough topcoats, the dust will go away lol
>>
>>15777958
>They are, and I never found anything that mentioned it, and only found out after using it.

Better than me. I only found out after trying to do an enamel wash over top of their (Non-Aqua) Gloss. Ate right into and melted the clearcoat making a sticky mess.

And yeah, it's been more than like a year and my Graze I used their flat on still becomes tacky feeling if I handle it for a minute or two. They looks gorgeous, but their clearcoats really aren't for kits you're meant to handle and repose.

I built the Sol Hornet about a week or so ago and love it. There's a ton of options for display and the articulation is fantastic. You're definitely going to want to take care of the seams on the flesh-tone shoulders and thighs, as they can be much more distracting than usual due to their color. Also, Post pictures of the Roadrunner when you finish it, I wanna know if it's worth it to buy the second one.

What are your opinions about Evanglion kits, also for this one as well? Is it good as others say?
>>
>>15778895
The old kits need some work, but look nice when they're dolled up. Arms are weird, at least on the Unit 1, where the rubber for the arms is a pain in the ass to deal with.

Stay away from the PG.

I grabbed them a year or two ago from Ebay with the intentions of making a best chapter Black Templars themed Durga, it was like $3 a sheet. The Imperial eagle on the chest and the L2s on the skirts are from the Space Marines Vehicle sheet, and the Salamanders logos are from the regular Space Marine sheet.

What if; the Astaroth maintained it's original color scheme despite being rebuilt.
>>
>>15778097
I've used these, they're okay but it seems kind of wasteful considering you're paying for thinned paints, and thus get less actual paint for your buck.. I'd recommend vallejo's metal color line over the air metallics, they tend to look better and I haven't had any problem getting them thinned.
I usually added a little bit of thinner even to the prethinned air line, so at that point you might as well transition to game color as I have done. It's easier to handpaint details with, too.
>>
>>15779067

Personally I prefer the air products, they work a bit better for me plus I can mix them in the cup of the airbrush which never worked out well with the non-air colors.

In the end though, I use both. I have the regular colors from when I handpainted my kits and the color libraries are different, not all model air colors have a direct model color equivalent. Plus handbrushed details, like you mentioned.

Guy posting the paints picture. How much should I thin the paints with the thinner? I read 1 drop thinner for every 4 paint, is that acceptable or do you have a different ratio?
>>
>>15779066
The astaroth's original color scheme was white, blue, red. The red color scheme of the Origin was what the Warren family did to it.
>>
>>15779151

Sounds about right for model air, I thin the varnishes more though as they come thick as syrup. Do get the flow improver as well though.

Use Future Floor Polish, just brush a little on at a time and with a few layers it will hold on better. Alternatively, a few drops of super glue.

I haven't gotten around to painting mine but I will tell you that the fingers are relatively flexible and may have trouble holding the accessories. I'm sure there's some way to ensure the paint stays on despite the flexibility but I haven't found it yet. On the bright side they are quite detailed and the expressive hands look fantastic
>>
>>15779590
Looks fine to me. Are the white portions on the inner frame intentional?
>>
>>15779668
No, I just didn't feel like coloring it in. I probably won't do much painting outside of small details and weathering tok the frame.

I realized after I got everything done, it looked pretty kampfery. While not a bad thing, I'd hoped it'd look more original.

Vidar done, first kit using the 1/100 IBO gundam frame that I've built. Ended up not doing any color separation on the frame for this project but I will certainly do so for the others.

You could always wait for the inevitable Awakened/Full Armor/Banshee/Phenex variants if you like those more than the standard Unicorn. I preordered one since I (along with most people) thought it was going to be a grenade and expected to display it permanently in Unicorn mode, but with all the reviews out I'm wishing I waited for the Awakened, since I prefer the White/Green to White/Red. Or Bandai might do another partnership with ANA and release an exclusive ANA White/Blue Unicorn, and that'd be sexy as all hell.

So does this conversion kit have any articulation, or is it just a statue? Not that there's too many poses I can imagine the F2000 pulling off.

>>15781023
Yes and no. The HGUC still has that gimmick for a shield storage rack and ability to dual wield, may not have as good articulation but its got the equipment. Still the question is who the fuck would design zaku weapons to have the double pegged weapons but no left holding hand for it?!

>Making a declaration by lower value is a tax evasion. If we marked much lower value than actual cost, we are charged with aiding and abetting of tax evasion. (We will face a fine of 500,000 yen and two year of imprisonment.) We cannot help any tax evasion.

yo, i saw this unicorn gundam one time at hobbytown that could transform and maybe had glowing pieces. anyone know the model so i can find it online?

If it glows it's the Perfect Grade.

It's fairly expensive since it's in 1/60 scale, and the LEDs are a separate purchase.

>>15783163
Don't scare him like that, I'm sure you could rig up a MG Unicorn with an LED system too. The more important question to ask is how big it was.
Also all Psychoframe, even the HG as far as I'm aware, will glow under UV light.

>>15783159
As for finding the kit online, either a local hobbystore or any of the usual suspects; HLJ, Banzaihobby, Hobbysearch (1999), USAGundam, etc. All depends on where you live.
Here's Banzai for reference; http://banzaihobby.com/Bandai-PG-Unicorn-Gundam
And yeah, it's an expensive kit. PGs are basically the apex of your gunpla experience after you've got a bunch of MGs and RGs under your belt and want a showy centerpiece.
>>
>>15783163
Isn't the LED kit for the pg unicorn ludicrously expensive?
Which is the biggest jewry ever, strip LEDs cost nothing. Have Japanese consumers not yet caught on to the fact that LEDs are in every electronic device nowadays because they're dirt cheap?
>>
>>15783201
Honestly you'd probably be better off buying the Daban LED kit. I assume it's basically the same thing but much cheaper.

Just finished building my second RG and this is solid as fuck. The posability and details are top tier compared to the MG. Definitely gonna be buying more. What should I get next? So far I have this and the Exia.

Also should I panel line it before going into decals? I feel that if I do that it might end up looking like it was from dalong.
