Discotek finally went and did it the beautiful bastards. We're finally going to have actual subs and the complete dub for Cyborg 009. Also a BD for Robot Carnival.

Cool

Fuck yes
>>
>>15775793
Great fucking news. Hopefully it does well enough for them to license the 1979 version too. Lot of great Lupin news too, glad they're finally releasing Legend of Gold Babylon, they had that one on hold for nearly a decade. BD editions of Mystery of Mamo and Fuma Conspiracy wouldn't be unwelcome either. And Ashita no Joe on top of that? Wow.
>>
>>15775821
>>15775840
Ashita no Joe is just the movie for right now fyi
>>
>>15775846
I know, but it's still great news. They'll probably do the sequel at least, even if they don't do either of the TV shows. I remember them talking about a license rescue of an old sports anime a couple of years back, at the time most people assumed it would be Hajime no Ippo. I didn't think it would be Joe.

This has been a really good year for this shit.

This is for the 2001 series, mongoloid.
>>

Now all thats left is Astro Boy 2003 and Deltora Quest and my bucket list is done

Same thing
>>

Now if Discotek would just license the 1960s and 1970s GeGeGe no Kitarou animes. I know that's not /m/, but it's still pretty good.

A youtube parody channel is now making official dubs
>>
>>15776759
One of them worked on the aborted english dub for Raijin Oh. There's worse ways of getting your name out there than youtube videos, it's not all that different than getting cast based on your performance in a local theater production.
>>
>>15776759
IIRC Xenoverse 2 had one of their actors as a joke voice option. Getting a bunch of comedy guys for a goofy anime like HELLS makes sense I guess plus it's probably cheap as fuck for Discotek.

Many of them were fandubbers before ditching it for parody dubs so it's not too much of a surprise that they'd want to do an official dub.

>>15778154
To be fair, he does deserve it since he does actual anime research. Still a weird show to get though.

>>15776443
>>15778489
Considering all the niche stuff they license, they would wind up committing company suicide if they got more blu-rays for stuff that a relative few care about. Gotta recoup costs and all.

>>15778652
Still though, Lupin sells the most for Discotek, so they can afford this.
>>
>>15778664
They still don't make enough for Discotek to consider getting the BDs for the first Lupin TV series though.

I mean, it's not the prettiest Toei production, although it has its moments like the first Ken vs. Raoh fight.
>>
>>15776707
As in (in that case) re-licensing for that (as well as for Blu-ray, also) since it was apparently "locked-up" after Genon went defunct.
>>
>>15778794
It's not an actual HD version, it's just the whole show in SD on three BD discs. Same as their release of Samurai Pizza Cats. SD on an HD disc. Fist of the North Star TV doesn't even have an HD release in Japan.

>Discotek is becoming the Criterion of anime

HOLYE SHIEEET
>>
>>15778973
>>15778886
Nope, welp, supposedly the 2nd DVD release of HnK in japan was based on new film masters done on HD which nicer colors, stable picture and all based on a new film scan BUT sadly its DnR and looks softer than the old 2003 DVD release, however, since it's an actual new film scan, maaaaaybe doesnt look as atrocious as the US Sailormoon BR's or the Saint Seiya BR's which are just shameless upscales with color correction, i mean hell the sailormoon BR's are the worst offenders not only since they use upscales but quite possibly stolen from internet rips due to the extremely pink tint they have and the butched filters that makes scenes blurry, sometimes in the same shot!

Funimation isnt much better either, with the lazy Seasons sets of DBZ for both the old Orange Bricks and the new Bluray Season sets, not to mention, most of their english dubs are still embarrassing, Kobayashi's Dragon Maid and Prison School anyone?
>>
>>15779432
Not to mention that Sony were dickbags when it came to dual language releases, aka, DUBTITLES ONLY!, like seriously, their releases of international films have this issue.
>>
>>15778870
Goddamn greedy family estate.

>>15779514
So, what are the chances of Disco doing a decent job on Fatal Fury, since that never got blu-rays either?
>>
>>15779493
Wait what? I thought they were just going to use the uncut dub that already exists.
>>
>>15779518
I can't wait to see how they make Funimation even worse
>>
>>15779646
They'll probably start charging Aniplex prices or some shit. Sounds about stupid enough for Sony.
>>
>>15779493
I don't think they're producing a new dub for 009, just using the old one and fitting it to the Japanese footage. IIRC it was uncut then edited down for the TV broadcast but Sony only ever released the first couple episodes uncut for whatever reason.
>>
>>15779650
I always theorized that the rebranding of Columbia Tristar Home Entertainment into Sony Pictures Home Entertainment had something to do with why the releasea were halted.
>>
>>15779644
Welp, that is what i read here, since it was mentioned that they are using former Abridged fandubbers, but yeah, i seem to remember Sony did an uncut dub of Cyborg but never completely release it.....although it really wasn't true uncut either, more like Early funimation hack-jobs like the Funi dub of classic dragonball, when the dub is just the same kid friendly dub for TV with the same plot and script revisions and just filling the gaps.

Also i wanna apologize for the typos, my keyboard its acting up, i am the anon who posted in the mazinger thread.
>>
>>15779693
They're using the Team Fourstar guys for Hells
>>
>>15779693
From what I recall, the initial broadcasts of the dub was actually less censored than what's in the audio on the "uncut" DVD. At least before CN found out and asked for edited versions upon rebroadcasts.

Incidentally, I think Columbia-Tristar/Sony being super goddamn lazy by copying and pasting the dub scripts is the only evidence left of the existence of some of those lines.

If someone wants to watch the english dub for Cyborg 009 they shouldn't have to dig for old VHS rips from Cartoon Network.

And nobody should have to dig for shit quality HK subs if they want to watch the show in Japanese with English subs.

>>
>>15779413
>Enjoy all 50 episodes on 4 discs
No, I don't think I will. This is just disrespectful to consumers. Even Dark Shadows got 10 episodes per disc, and you cannot tell me there's more demand for a 1225 episode soap opera from 1966 than literally any anime that has aired on Cartoon Network in the past two decades.
>>
>>15782767
I think CN aired Superior Defender Gundam Force. Besides, isn't Dark Shadows something of a cult classic?
>>
>>15782818 #
It's such a cult classic that even 51 years later there are brand new audio dramas being produced based on it.

I almost, almost picked up that Astro Boy set even after I realized it was just going to be a repackaging of the old incomplete dub only Sony box, but I just can't give money to Mill Creek. Not after the shit show that was their Gamera trilogy releases.

They didn't translate a single fucking bit of the heavy amount of onscreen text, and the subs were so poorly timed they usually ended up lagging out and ending up several lines behind or ahead. Those movies deserve so much better.
>>
>>15783390
It doesn't help that the only release for Super Robot Red Baron on the web is from a Mill Creek set rather than the BCI Eclipse release, so that has delayed subs too.

DEAR LORD, cant believe the US dvds look that bad!

what a disaster!, specially since they seemmed to be using Tsubaraya's masters from 2005 (unless they are from Chaiyo).

I member screenshots from Tokyo monsters showing how gorgeous the japanese DVDs were.

meanwhile in japan, look at what Tsubaraya did to one of the non-japanese made ultra shows that was originally mastered on video.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0jfevFuxv0

granted they kept ALL or at least most of the original film footage on film, only the 90s video SFX were video sourced, but things like titles and such were recreated from scratch!
>>
>>15785080
It doesn't help that the fanbase sits on their thumbs and does nothing to afford the Tsuburaya DVDs, let alone blu-rays (although understandably expensive). It says a lot when the MCS release is the best we got for the first series.

Viz is going to take eight years but they're going to publish all of Jojo eventually. They did forty volumes of One Piece in two years, they're the only english language manga publisher with that kind of muscle. If I had to make Ippo a sales success I'd wait for a new anime season to start airing, push for a new home video release of the original anime t coincide with that, and then start publishing the manga in big two or three volume compilations, like they did with Monster and Master Keaton. And I'd stop at the Miyata/Randy Boy Jr match because nothing in the series after that is worth reading.
