As a matter of fact, I just finished showing my neophyte friend Unicorn after his only other Gundam series was Wing.

You'll have to pause several times to explain what Zeon is, what happened in the One Year War, who Char was, and why there is a space princess. But it's really well animated and the fights are some of the best in the entire franchise, so I say go for it.

Alright, i hope this goes ok.

0079 or bust

When I mentioned Gundam to a friend, he always had the negative impression that these kind of mechanime were just about teenage kids in mecha singlehandedly saving the universe, so Wing, SEED, and Unicorn are out of the question. If their first response to seeing what 0079 is that they can't stand the dated animation, then they have shit taste in anime in general and should be discarded considering the cultural significance of 0079 to Gundam and UC in general, but if they're still somewhat willing to get into Gundam despite that then Thunderbolt can serve as lube considering it doesn't need a whole lot of beforehand knowledge to enjoy.

00 or the 0079 movies
Normally I'd recommend the tv series, but that's incredibly daunting to a newcomer who isn't really into Gundam. In any case the original series is highly regarded for a reason.

Unicorn will probably make him less interested in seeing the rest of Gundam given the high production values it has compared to evrything else, except for the OVAs.
>>
The 0079 movies are the best way to show Gundam to someone who's never seen it before. Most of my enjoyment of Unicorn comes from the nodes to previous shows and the fact that it's a conclusion to early UC.
I would recommend the 0079 series, but i know that your friend won't finish the whole thing because of the animation.

Nah, 0079 movies are the definitive best.

It's the worst place to start, because Unicorn is meant to be the epilogue of several Gundam series.

The quick pace doesn't do the first half any favors, desu. I'd either watch the original series up to Belfast and switch to the movies, or read The Origin.

>slowly getting more and more of my friends to appreciate the Gundam
>never start with the classic series
>most of them saw Wing or SEED when the were young, let's go with that
>"Hey man, there's this super-well-animated series called Unicorn, it's quite short, you'll like it"
>"Did you like it? There's something even shorter and even better animated, it's called Thunderbolt, you'll get up to speed in one evening"
"Oh, you wanna know what's that Feddie vs Zeon thing?"

Here's where I suggest more dated UC series like 08th MS Team or Stardust Memory, but never the actual source material. Like someone mentioned before, the first series is dated as fuck, and Build Fighters/Try, while fanservice-heavy and easy to pick up, suffers from being addressed to kids.

Still, pretty good feel. One of them even has a modded PSP with some SD Gundam Generation, so that's another topic to discuss.

I used to think Unicorn was a terrible place to start because you're missing out on all the references but it seems like it's gotten a lot of newfags interested in exploring the rest of UC who wouldn't have otherwise put up with old anime so what the hell do I know?

Thunderbolt is smarter than most Gundam series, and definitely better than it gets credit for being. (At least the OYW movie, anyway).
>>
>>15763742
Thunderbolt S1/December Sky is kind of a godsend when it comes to getting new people into UC Gundam (canon arguments aside as they're irrelevant to my point).

You can sell it as, "an hour long robot war meets Cowboy Bebop with great animation," and most people will give it a shot.

It's simple enough and has so little to do with the main arc of UC Gundam that they won't be lost while at the same time not being too shallow. It also leaves out enough that they'll be interested in learning more.
>>
>>15762380
I used to think people were crazy for saying Origin but the more I thought about it the more I realized it's kind of perfect for someone not into giant robots since it slowly eases you into the mecha aspect.

You'd need to judge the person's tolerance of space politics but if they don't like space politics you probably shouldn't be introducing them to Gundam in the first place.
>>
>>15763777
Episode 1 of Origin got me to marathon UC.
>>
I'd recommend giving them some background on the OYW, then showing 'em 08th MS Team. Good consumer-converter.
