***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

I paint my kits, so that is not a problem for me anyway. Having said that the procedure for glossy is still the same, you just need to use even finer sandpaper.
>>
When airbrushing, how do you get all sides of a piece without smudging it?
>>
>>15748927
Dual action airbrush, blow air onto the paint at a low psi to dry it to the touch.

= THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

Anyone have experience building IBO kits?
Is it just me or are the polycaps loose in general? I've built two and they both seem to have that issue, although I might just have bad luck or something
>>
>>15749090
Any problems in particular?
I'll admit that I've eyed that one in the past but do the problems just stem from it being old as shit?
>>
>>15749152

If that's true, that's honestly heartwarming. I'll buy a kit from them when I can.
>>
>>15749152
>Is it just me or are the polycaps loose in general?
No, it's fairly common. The IBO kits are readily apparent with cost-cutting measures outside the designs to the kit manufacture itself. At least they're not absolute shit like the G-reco kits, but in the end Bandai sold plenty of IBO crap kits.

I'm so disappointed in the shitty Shiden myself. The legs and shoulders are atrocious.

>>15749156
Most issues are due to being old as shit. It suffers from all the problems the zaku III had but managed to make them worse from seem lines to just general engineering and mold quality(lots of flash). If I had just snapped it together it would have been done in an hour and a half tops as it is incredibly simple with a very low parts count but I had to at least put a little effort into this one. The seem lines you can still see I sanded the everliving hell out of and while I can't even feel them on my nail they can still be seen, it won't be cured without either paint or putty. The hand MEANT for holding the sword does an awful job of it and the armor plat that covers it isn't actually large enough to fill the massive gap it leaves. Luckily the kit DOES come with a bunch of PC extra hands and with some cutting I got the sword in and plate on while looking and holding better than the piece of shit they expected you to use. There is no torso twice and the head doesn't really stay on, I'll be working on it again in the future at some point, especially the eye piece. It wouldn't be that hard to make it a rotating piece that can look around like any zaku so long as you sand it round but they had to go for the oblong shape and actually give you stickers for looking left/right for some reason. The legs manage to be worse than the Zaku III's and are beyond salvation, the flight type will never do more than wave it's arms around and even if you put it on a stand it will never look like it's flying.

I don't really hate the tubby little fellow though just building him was awful.

>>15749194
I have a gouf custom to build still but I don't want to destroy that kit just to improve this one.
>>
>>15749100
Did you reply at all? They sent me a thankyou on my first purchase as well and I also thought it was automated so I ignored it.
>>
>>15749246
If it's any consolation I think you did pretty well with the seems. I wouldn't really notice them with a casual glance.
>>
is there a worse feeling than forgetting to put a polycap in place?
Especially with those old mastergrades where you have to screw shit together. The kampfer is really a pain in the ass
>>
>>15749342
I almost always do this when I'm building the second foot and feet always snap so fucking tightly together.
>>
>>15749296
Thanks. I did learn to let the cement settle a little more before going at it. I think that caused the majority of my issues when it came to the seems
>>

It can get in line behind the others I haven't gotten around to painting yet. The overall look is fine, the kit is bad because of ill fitting badly sized parts and draconian articulation.

For the record the Zaku III had similar seem problems but was a much nicer kit to build overall proving they did have it in them to do better back then.
>>
>>15749212
Haven't seen many shiden complaints. Interesting.
>>
P-Bandai Tallgeese Flugel WHEN? I'd be willing to pay like 10,000 Yen for it.

Only two kits away from the 200th Master Grade being released. I'm hoping it's either the G-Self or Char's Zaku 3.0.

What do you guys think it'll be?
>>
>>15749898
>zaku 3.0
is this really necessary
>>
>>15749898
Unicorn 2.0
>>
>>15749898
Zaku II 3.0 would satisfy me as a zeekfag, but it'd pretty unnecessary, I'm not too sure what could be done with a new Unicorn either. I'd really like some left field fan favorite or something else unexpected.
>>
>>15749898
I want a G-Self, but the pessimist in me agrees with >>15749905. The 1/1 Unicorn's being set up at Odaiba and Bandai's shown that they can make a stable small-scale transforming Unicorn with the RG, so it's a pretty opportune time to milk the Unicorn cow again.
I'm expecting/hoping that the 199th MG will be a GM like they teased a year ago.

I really don't want another Unicorn but that's what I'm expecting. Does that new Sandrock not count as 199? I never saw the tease but if it's supposed to be a GM I'd kill for a Jegan, especially since the Geara Doga and Jesta already have MGs.

>>
>>15749939
Bandai doesn't count P-Bandai kits or exclusives. The GM thing was part of a display showing off the then-unreleased GM Sniper II and GM II, but I'm hoping it hasn't been forgotten. Check the walls behind the display cage.
>>
>>15749945

But that doesn't matter because we're getting Unicorn 2.0 anyways. I honestly don't care about the 200 itself, I just really hope that now that the IBO line, Unicorn RG, ZZ ver KA, and the Star Wars line is done we can get more MGs per year again. 3 last year, 4 the year before, and shaping up to 4 this year is fucking dumb when we've gotten twice that in the past.

Another thing about "Ver. Ka" is that all gunpla from the early 2000s onward are almost all "touched" by Katoki after he took over the Gunpla department. Stuff like HG F91 and MG Shining/God Gundam all obviously feature katoki's aesthetics despite not having the Ver. Ka label.

There's also things like Victory Gundam, Unicorn Gundam, etc. that are all designed by Katoki himself but he slaps the "ver. Ka" label on some releases of them anyway. I guess "ver. Ka" is really just any release that Katoki could flop his dick about however he wants for it.
>>
>>15751313
I'd look at the Ver Ka as having his personal seal of approval. If it's a kit he was heavily involved in and thinks is excellent, he slaps Ver Ka on it.
>>
>>15751300
HG isn't at all. They're just bigger and have more parts.

RG is going to depend on the kit and how well you can deal with microscopic parts though the process of building is the same.
>>
>>15751316
>>15751043
"Ver. ka" means katoki was involved in the kits creation during every step of the process. Proportions, engineering, decals, runner layout, etc all are in accordance to his vision of the kit. They are his personally designed kits beyond just doing the lineart.

Also, is captcha screwing up for anyone else today?
>>
>>15751316
I think it's just a way of him making a kit but freeing himself of the need to try and match up with what we see in the anime/manga/etc that might not always reflect his original design work the way he wants.

It's more, "this is how I personally want it to look," and not, "this is a close representation of the media it appeared in."

That and it's just a marketing gimmick.

>>15751367

>>15751364
Kinda. The Unicorn variations, Victories, and original Sinanju were rife with issues, but the rest of the line is stellar.
>>
>>15751300
RGs can be harder because the pieces are so small. Detailing becomes harder, an pieces are easier to break/fall off.

MGs aren't harder, they just take longer to assemble.

But its not like there is anything inherently different in the techniques between an HG, MG and RG. There wont be any curveballs. For the most part it the different grades mean more or less detail number of pieces and or size.

I built two HGs just to test my skills on because they were cheap if I fucked up something. After that I moved straight to MGs.

I'm working on some new techniques for the groupbuild, and I have a convention later this month. I hope I don't have to rush through painting this build to get it in on time.

I like trying out new techniques, but I can never pull it off. So since I'm making do with subpar skills, I tend to build and paint fast and reckless.

before u assemble the head, you can mask the visor, trim it to shape, take off the mask and set it aside, assemble the head/seamweld and apply the mask again
>>
>>15750715
The easiest trick I've found for masking a GM visor is to assemble the head with some tinfoil covering the visor then take some tweezers and pull out the tin foil when you're done.
>>
>>15750655
Sakibure also only got a BF custom, though at least it was a normal release.
>>
>>15751364
Katoki does have hit or miss kits Victory was his second jab at a fully transformable suit and on top of that it was a tiny gundam to even consider fitting a complex transformation gimmick in it. he also has his good kits like the Wing series kits, the Proto Zero among them as well. But his best kits are the Sazabi and Nu gundam.
>>
>>15751364
Im not romanticizing it. Ver. Ka on a kit literally means he peraonally was involved in its entire design process beyond the lineart. Its the selling point of the kits.

Tamiya is always out of the panel accent colors for black. How do I make my own panel wash? Tamiya enamels thinned down 1:1? What brush to I use?

Alternatively, other ways to panel line that AREN'T using the regular Gundam Markers.
>>
>>15752199
Enamel paint thinned down a whole lot. It can be done with enamel thinner but the most common recommendation I hear is with lighter fluid. I can personally confirm this works, done it several times using Testors enamels and Zippo lighter fluid. It's also cheaper than enamel thinner, one trip to the supermarket will last a while for low cost. There's not a definite ratio I've seen, but onky a few drops of paint will do and a higher concentration of thinner. You have to do it over a gloss coat if you're panel washing, otherwise it won't flow well as might harm paint or plastic underneath. It cannot be flat, that smudges, it has to be gloss. I've used Future floor polish to good effect as the gloss before panel washing, for what it's worth.

HLJ doesn't even have all the shit in stock, but it'd be 3145 Yen (36 CAD, 28.50 USD) + 15.70CAD (12.40USD) for shipping.

It's so much nicer to not be limited by some shitty tool like markers, plain old paint and brush give you so much more variety and use of applications. A set of nice brushes is like $5-10 and whatever color won't be much. If you're willing to put in effort anyway just go the full way. They also give you the application of techniques like weathering and whatnot.

Groovy indeed. I dug a little channel into the handle to accommodate the peg on the TG hand. It's not pretty, but I'll clean it up later before I do any painting.

I'll likely never fully paint kits, just minor details. As it is I'm content with snapping and panel lining. Brushes is a good idea though now that you talk about it like that. If only for small details (missile tips, thruster bells, piping, etc.), what do you recommend?
>>
>>15753377
Spotter brushes, anything with a super-fine tip. You don't really need anything bigger unless you plan on actually hand-painting entire pieces and not just small details.

Speaking of painting, do we have any really advanced painters here? I have a stupid (and technical) question.

Personally I went with the standar color scheme, but I made the light grey parts much darker, the yellow more orange and the dark blue I made black. I love the original white color, but this way it's a little more detailed.

There already is a Unicorn ver.Ka. it was literally the first unicorn MG. It's going to be Unicorn 2.0.

Why not drag it out with an unboxing video, a speedbuild and then review?

I just don't really understand the point of an unboxing video. I realize they're basically slaves to Youtube, but you can get everything relevant from the review.

>runners
You can see part separation and nub marks/kitbashing potential from an OOB review. A good reviewer should talk about stickers and runners/whatever anyways.

>reading the manual's lore and specs
Not deserving of 10 minute long video, that can easily be touched on in a review or quick look/speed build.

It just seems like the other videos render the OOB video pointless.

I know it's not the kit, that's just how the unicorn's knees are and there's really no engineering way around it because of the transformation, but god those knees look terrible the way they bend.
Still a fantastic kit. If only they'd put as much effort in to making a new frame for the RG Sinanju instead of reusing a frame from a kit that doesn't even have a heavy backpack, because that makes sense.
