Pretty much. But Getter Robo never had the same cultural impact as Mazinger. Combining robots only really became a thing when they realized they could be made into toys that could actually combine and be sold separately.

Completely false. As soon as Getter Robo came out, there were a slew of combining robots that followed. Even Gundam followed this trend.

There were plenty of combining robots in the years which followed: just one year after Getter Robo G you have "LETS COM-BINE!" Combattler V, Gordam with its modular parts, Ga-Keen with its two-part combining bots. But to call it a 'slew' is pushing it.
There's also the fact that the ones which followed may well have been imitating the imitations; the Gundam's core block is far closer to Gordam than Getter, I would argue Daitarn 3 was Tomino trying to do his own version of the combining concept from Combattler (having produced it but not having a full creative role), with Ideon being him taking that even further, etc.
It wouldn't be long, anyway, until Macross came along and blew combining out of the water, replacing it with transforming. Getter made ripples, while Mazinger made waves.
