The other main OVA that doesn't feature newtype spirtual mysticism would be Gundam 0083. It's not really gritty and down to earth, though. There's quite a few high end machines featured in the story, but damage, repairs, and logistics do play a part.

I recommend the OVA instead of the movie, which cuts out too much stuff and has horrible pacing. If you liked the fights in 0080 and 08th MS Team, you'll probably like 0083 just as much.

Now, when I say it's not gritty, it's not like 08th MS Team where it's a bunch of regular joes fighting on the front lines. It's more of a... thriller type story? It's about a ship and its crew chasing after Zeon remnants who have stolen a weapon, and there's a bit more than what meets the eye.

If 0080 was all about Feddy grunts getting slaughtered, then 0083 is a reversal of that. this time the POV follows a Federation ship so this time you'll see the Feddy pilots getting to shine, as well as some of the nicer looking GM types.

I wouldn't say it's a minimum. It definitely shows up in a few parts in the second half of the original series, and definitely not as much as in later stories. I think the movie trilogy even emphasizes certain scenes more, like the transparent eyes in space with an ocean around.
