Originally these characters were from a public service ad campaign to encourage greeting people:

It got really popular during the time of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, as I believe it was one of the things they broadcasted a lot at the time in affected areas.
Long story short, at that time some artists started making these transformation videos, and it turned into a meme of some made-up not-Sunrise anime series called Armored Chrysanthemum.

that's fucking beautiful. thank you for enlightening me, anon.
what would /m want from armored chrysanthemum kotubukia kits?

>koto
I'd prefer they be a one-off dead line like Keroro where they have a working combining gimmick, and a small pilot animal to go along with the mech.

what happened was in the immediate wake of the earthquake a lot of sponsors said they wanted their ads pulled, as it's usually considered bad form to have "DEATH AND DESTRUCTION brought to you by Tokyo Disneyland!" so one of the more common PSAs was the "magic words" one
because of the drastic nature of the situation LOTS of sponsors had their ads pulled, and there weren't many PSAs to go around
I remember seeing the magic words PSA at least twice in a single commercial break in my limited moontv viewing.
So with the saturation of these rather goofy PSAs the onlines started doodling, and that is what ensued.

ah, pardon my french. but yeah that'd be pretty neat. i wouldn't be opposed to them being fully transformable just to see what kind of shit-show that would be. Especially the symmetrical-combiner kids https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yl_Ey_0HN6M

Thanks for the clarification, what I know around that time was pretty sketchy.

That's both super cute and really awesome.

What does PSA mean?

Public Service Announcement

Like that person said
Public Service Announcements are usually used in commercial broadcasting to fill time when you don't have commercials to run during the break.
