I remember the enemy mothership being Macross-lite. Tons of the enemies fighting them have designs reminiscent of old giant robots shows.
They got the voice of Optimus Prime to be the villain.

The hidden superweapon is very much done in the same vein as Iron Giant.

I think the intention was that they were a Sentai team.

That said, the weapon that always springs to mind when I think about the random references of Megas was that time it pulled out what was literally just Combattler V's flamethrower, mostly because it's very unexpected (why that of all things?) but pretty awesome.
