***READ THE GUIDE***

For those new to gunpla/plamo or even just new to this thread; please read the guide. Please read it before asking questions, as there is a chance it has already been answered there.

For those unfamiliar, "plamo" is a shortened form of "plastic model". If it's made of plastic, someone can probably help you here!
If you're new, you're gonna fuck up. Don't worry! If you're experienced, don't make the new people worry!

>Why won't anyone answer my question?
Try being specific, especially about your materials and process. Post pictures whenever possible; even if the kit/part looks bad, you are more likely to get help posting pictures.

= THICK MS GROUPBUILD ==

Build a kit of your choice that's heavily armored, and thick in the thighs/arms/torso/general area. Examples include:
>Dom + Dom Variants
>The O
>Virtue/Seravee Gundams
>Gusion/Man Rodis
>Full Armor gundams (If they're heavily armored, and not guns strapped everywhere like the FA Unicorn)

Non-Bandai kits are allowed, so feel free to whip out a Frame Arms kit or something and work with that as long as you make it thicc as fuck.

Start Date: 6/15
End Date: 8/31

Really fun build, shows it age. Have to do a bit of painting, the joints require some thickening to hold poses. Overall though is a very fun build that didn't really take a long time to do even with painting. Just need to get some sticky tack to help hold the weapons, then do the waterslides and top coat.

How often does Bandai produce kits of old or unpopular kits?
>>
>>15735620
Your pic related is the answer.
>>
>>15735620
Every so often. Different series get reprinted at different rates; Wing/EW and FGs get reprinted relatively often, while Bandai reprints Victory and F91 less so. I think only the G-Saviour and the Old HGs are the only kits Bandai never reprints, so if you can wait long enough you should be able to snag whatever you want.

So the guide mentions that MGs before the Strike can be not so good, and I've been using that for choosing MGs. However, are there any of those old MGs that actually ARE really good?

I was really hoping for a G-Saviour, actually. It was in Build Fighters and I kind of fell in love with it.

Also the Sumo, the pink Zeta MG, and there were a few AGE HG kits that I wanted parts from. I haven't seen any of them in stock.

G-Saviour sometimes pops up on Mandarake for ~1800 yen, which is a pretty decent price considering it was originally sold for 1500 and is out of print

I feel you on the AGE kits; its Federation grunts are solid and the Vegans' whole dragon/dinosaur aesthetic made for some pretty unique designs. it bombed hard though, so reprints are few and far between. The Adele and Clanche Custom are sexy and in my favorite shade of blue, fuck. I really should've got them during the last reprint.

Turn A suits definitely haven't had a reprint in a long while. Checking Bandai's delivery schedule it hasn't had any reprints since before November 2015, which is a shame because after building the Kapool I really want to see what else the line has to offer (especially the Flat). All I can say is to try your luck with Japanese second-hand sites, or just keep waiting.

If you're talking about Amuro's Z3, then that's an entirely different can of worms known as exclusives. IIRC the MG Z3 (first released in 2007) could only be purchased when watching the Green Divers short (first made in 2001, and made to take an entire planetarium to display). However, Green Divers hasn't been shown anywhere since 2013, making Amuro's Z3 incredibly rare nowadays. It easily goes for 12k yen on Mandarake, which makes me shudder to think about how much it's price gouged by sellers on auction sites and Amazon. Maybe Bandai'll rerelease it as part of another event, but I wouldn't count on it. I guess if patterns hold true then Green Divers'll get another showing in 2019 and more Z3s will be sold.

>>15735713
You might want to rewatch 0079. Amuro was born on Earth, but was taken with his father to Side 7. Kai once makes a jab by calling Amuro an "Earth Elite" because of that.
>>
>>15735715
Am I wrong to believe that they would still continue to produce unpopular kits to try to recoup or at least make a little money off of the molds?

Surely they would spend their resources on meeting the demand of the popular kits, of course.
>>
>>15735731
It isn't like the amount of plastic is the limiting factor, they just only have so many machines. Machines that can consistently inject plastic evenly enough to get past bandai quality control are neither cheap nor compact. And they need one for each runner of each kit in production at any given time. And switching them out is a hassle, the molds are solid steel and heavy enough that they need machines to move them around.
You're most likely to see reprints of less popular kits when there are more popular kits being reprinted that use one or more of the same runners, like polycaps or something.

Good work, anon. You've got a real knack for gunpla.
>>
Is Chinagguy really not selling or are you just memeing?
>>
>>15736930
I think bandai probably overestimated the overlap between gundam fans and people willing to put kawaii anime girl figures on their shelves where people can see them.
At least with gunpla it's just like a weeb version of an old dad hobby, and you can say you like painting and detailing them and it's socially acceptable.
>>
>>15736941
Even as someone who both is a Gundam fan and is willing to put anime robot girl figures on my shelves where people can see them, I'm not interested in the Super Fumina and followups because they lack room for customization unless you're a much better modeler than I am. Stuff like FA Girls, Megami Device, Vlockers Fiore, etc. are babby-tier easy to modify, and the fact that they don't have a set characterization makes them a lot easier to adjust them to my tastes. Chinagguy, in contrast, is going to be China in cosplay no matter what else I do with it.

Yeah, as my first kit I was using it as a testbed for different things that I wanted to try out such as painting the inner frame, having the interior of the armor done in a different color, and also just seeing how colors look together on a kit.

Honestly it looked a lot better when I just filled in the colors using the template, but the actual sprays deviated somewhat from the 2d mockup so I tried to make due and went ahead anyway.
Overall I consider it a success. My next project will be more coherent.
>>
>>15737790
lol fuck that the Dragon Momoko Unicorn is literally more detailed than the Bandai one
>>
>>15737861
Well you ought to have prefaced that it was a testing piece, because that's totally understandable. Why didn't you paint the inside of the purple shoulder pad though? That blue edge triggers the tism just a little too hard

The Pearl Blue is a lot lighter than what is shown, almost nearing gray under certain lighting.
The Dark Blue is much darker than what was shown, basically being black as the other anon had noted.
And the Lavender is a lot more faded than the flat color that was presented on the website.

also I meant the GN-X was my next planned kit (or Tieren, honestly I'm feelin the Tieren right now)
Here's the color scheme I got planned for it.
>>
>>15737876
Do you mean "why DID you paint the inside of the purple shoulder"? Because it's painted in bril-blue like the interior of the other shoulder pad.
>>
>>15737889
He's saying if you're going to paint the exterior of the shoulder pad purple, you really ought to paint the interior of it purple too for consistency.
>>
>>15737876
>>15737903
Oh, well that was just making it consistent with the other shoulder pad as well as practicing using painter's tape.
>>
>>15735891
Well done Anon, it's beautiful.
>>
>>15737861
as a testbed, sure, but if you want to see how the sprays look, test it on plastic spoons, cause the chest and head looks so out of place with the rest of the kit. also why DIDN'T you use that colorscheme

That is LITERALLY the color scheme I used though save for the legs. Like I said the flat colors they provided (as in pic related) on the website differ quite a lot from how they actually looked.

Since at that point I already had the cans and there was no returning them, I went ahead and painted the kit as such.
>>
>>15737929
also I bought the sprays back in 2011 when I first purchased the gouf custom and was less experienced. Only recently did I start getting back into gunpla and wanted to finish what I had started 6 years ago.

Gouf Custom.png
82KB, 800x940px
Honestly having four primary colors on a Gouf is just too much. You'd be better served with a simple two tone scheme like this (or the classic Gouf color scheme, which is light blue with a dark blue chest and skirts). There's a whole bunch of play - you could make the head Dark Blue, you could do the head and upper torso dark blue with just the lighter blue legs, it would probably even look good in a monotone blue as well. But three blues was overkill, and purple was just pissing on the grave.
Don't get me wrong, purple is a good color for a Zeon suit. Just not like that with those shades.
>>
>>15737929
this might sound like a retarded question, but did you prime your parts, cause from my experience from tamiya spray cans, the colors came out to what its supposed to on a coat of primed parts
>>
>>15737968

>>
>>15737967

>>
>>15737910
Don't use painters tape, it's not effective for masking Gunpla. Get Tamiya masking tape, it doesn't let paint seep in.
>>
>>15738050
Really? I didn't notice any places where the paint seeped. I was looking to purchase it anyway as I think the thinner strips will be easier to work with.
>>
Anyone have a problem with the MG Nemo? Mine is really brittle, whereas none of my other kits are. It hasnt been exposed to sunlight, and all it has on is topcoat, but its really fragile and lacks clutch. Only had it on a shelf for 3 years, and my older MGs are still relatively stable.

I'm building a DM Tallgeese 1 right now and the plastic is nowhere close the quality of Bandai's. Also there is the fitting issues and some badly molded pieces here and there not to mention a general looseness of the parts.

Thing is, with seamwelding and painting it's shaping up decently so if you put in a little work you can make them look good. HOWEVER as soon as you start on them you'll immediately know why they are cheaper than the real deal.

So sure you can go for a bootleg and pay less, but the kit will not be a good, require more work to look decent and there is the chance some parts wont fit right or are broken/deformed. It comes down to what you think is more important, the price or the quality (and the difference in quality is huge).

We got a MG The O. Nothing is a lost cause.

Also I don't know what goes on for making the kits, but to me it seems like making some more 2.0 kits would be a no-brainer because they could easilly double dip them and reuse frames for things like Build Fighters. Like a Kampfer 2.0 > Kampfer Amazing, or a God 2.0 > Build Burning, Qubeley 2.0 > Qubeley Papillon, all that.
And the S1 00 gundams at least share a basic structure. If Exia gets a 2.0, they should just be able to reuse the frame for at the very least Dynames and Virtue, Kyrios might be a bit of a problem because he transforms but seeing what the plamo wizards at Bandai can do, it shouldn't be that much of a stretch.

This seems so obvious to me there has to be something I'm missing or else they would have done it already.

i might be crazy, but what are they going to do to a unicorn 2.0, other than improving the articulation and stability, what can they do to "improve the look". the rg, mg, the pg, and the mega size all look the same, so unless the 2.0 looks drastically different, i dont think so

Help me decide what kit to get next.
I'm stuck between RX-78-2 Ver. 3.0 and Full Armor Gundam Thunderbolt Ver. KA.
I'm leaning towards Thunderbolt because it's got a lot more display options, but something about the more classic design of RX keeps changing my mind
>>
>>15740436
I think I understand, the bait is the idea that you ruined a Ryusei-Go which is a rather high demand kit that fetches an above-average aftermarket price.
Still, it is a rather nonsensical image and so I can only really give it a rating of 4/10
It's not satisfying on any level.
>>
>>15740446
The Thunderbolt Ver Ka is way more expensive, but it's the better kit.
Hell, you can just not add the additional armor and it's an RX-78-2 with a different color scheme.

No, they're a fun building experience since they're so different in construction compared to what gunpla is like today. Grab a few just to see what they're like, but if you feel up to the kitbashing aspect grab a HGUC GM to go with that GM Cannon and try to mesh the two together

From what I hear the MSV kits are a bit better than the old 0079 kits articulation wise, if that matters to you.

I'm probably not gonna meet deadline, if only because even if I finish all my mods and cleanup I will not have painted at all- and I still don't have the airbrush (or the funds for it).
Might submit my unfinished kit at the last minute just to put my feet in the water, though.
>>
>>15742717
Better to submit an unfinished kit than nothing at all. What were you planning?
>>
>>15742717
During the graze custom build, I was planning on making a Grimgerde with the TG3 backpack and rifle. I had it all planned out, color scheme and all, but sadly my 1/144 Tallgeese 3 kit ended up on indefinite backorder. I decided to paint my Grimgerde as is and submitted that for the groupbuild. People didn't like that and said that I didn't even put in any effort (most probably haden't noticed it was actually painted and all), but I was glad that I submitted something atleast, because I enjoyed the fact that I participated.

My point is, if you really want to participate for the fun of it and your kit isn't done, just submit it. If participating is what you look forward to then just do it. People will probably complain about it (we are on /m/ afterall), but you will still have participated (unlike most others).

If however it's about that particular build and if showing that is what is important to you then you should just finnish your kit and submit it when it's done.
