I was just playing the PS2 game. I've watched the OVA a long time ago, I didn't even remember most of the characters. Just one guy who kept saying "Daisaku-kun", which I now know is called Cervantes.

By the way, I heard there's a continuation to the OVA in a manga? I heard it tells the story of Big Fire (the leader, not the syndicate).
>>
>>15712750
There was one that told its own story that came out around the time of the OVA.

I haven't read it so I can't say much about it, but I hear the IPO get fleshed out a bit more in it.

There was a manga that came out years later, which used the same characters in a parallel world setting called The Day The Earth Burned (pic related).

Some of it was translated, but not all of it.

It fleshes out a lot of the characters and starts from an earlier point than the OVA but it's very different in tone and style.

>>15712750
>>15712771
there was also a several part doujin for Super Robot Wars 64(which Giant Robo is in) which continue the Giant Robo plot

Happy Birthday to dat soundtrack too.

Isn't Giant Robo much older than 25?

Both the manga and its live action adaptation came out in 1967.

But the OVA was first released in July, 1992.

You're welcome to talk about anything Giant Robo, or Yokoyama related, if you want, though.

Robo's got a bad case of Star Platinum face there.

I remember watching this along with a bunch of other 90s /m/ shows one winter break. Though I remember watching the English dub that had a really good voice over to the intro, but when I went back I swear it was a different voice actor with a really bland delivery. Where there two English dubs or am I just remembering wrong?
>>
>>15720190
There were indeed two of them, one done by NYAV Post, and the other by Manga Entertainment.
>>
>>15720190
>Robo's got a bad case of Star Platinum face there.
Someone pointed this out back when it was getting translated and explained the artist actually started off as an assistant on Jojo before he went solo.

Which work of his are easily available to watchn/read in order to fully appreciate Giant Robo ? I watched the first episode a while ago but felt kinda lost
>>
>>15721517
Some of the names and characters are borrowed from other works like Tetsujin 28-gou but don't really resemble the originals
>>
>>15721517
While you don't need to read the manga to enjoy the OVA, the original works are very much worth checking out at some point in your life.

Off the top of my head I think it's

>Giant Robo
>Sangokushi
>Babel II
>Mars

That's not everything in GR, but I think that's all the stuff that's currently available in English.

As a personal recommendation, I also highly suggest the Date Masamune manga he did.

His classic history stuff honestly rivals his scifi in terms of how cool the characters are, but I really like Yokoyama's style of storytelling.

Also I'm genuinely in love with his art style and panel work, but at this point I'm just gushing.
>>
>>15721517
If you've ever read Romance of the Three Kingdoms and The Water Margin you'll recognize half the cast. The other half come from his sci-fi series. They're really not much more than references, ones you'll appreciate more if you're familiar with Yokoyama's work but not much more than that. You'll see Big Fire and think "Oh that's Babel II and he's in the ruins of the Tower of Babel, that's cool. And Yomei's his loyal subordinate? Weird." Small references that should inform or subvert your expectations for certain characters, but if you don't know them it won't really affect your enjoyment.

Giant Robo's meant to be the penultimate chapter of this sprawling epic which we never see the majority of, you know these characters have an unseen history of which we get the barest glimpses and we try to piece together the hows and the whys. There are some tidbits gleamed from the liner notes they included with the original laserdisc releases (like Cervantes being responsible for turning Yoshi blue and Taisou killing him and taking out Alberto's eye because of it, or Kawarazaki stepping down and splitting the authority of leadership of the Magnificent Ten and BF's Chief Strategist between Hanzui and Komei after they lost Giant Robo to the IPO) but most of it we'll never know.

You ever see The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eighth Dimension? Similar appeal there. The viewer's thrown in at the deep end to this fantastical world and most of the spectacle comes from genuinely not knowing what's going to happen next.
>>
>>15712843
>>15712771
>Not to mention another manga which is about stuff against Big Fire (The Seige of Babel manga not the SRW doujin)
>>
>>15722349
Wasn't that a sequel to the Day the Earth Burned?

or am I thinking of something else?
>>
I have legitimately been meaning to watch this show for almost twelve years, ever since I came across screen caps on an anime message board in high school. The art style sold me instantly but I couldn't afford the DVD set or go through less legal channels at the time. Every time someone reminds me of it I tell myself I'll finally watch it, but end up forgetting and never tracking it down.

They're both published in Champions RED and have the same staff working on both.

Earth Burned ended and lead into Siege of Babel's manga.

I didn't care for the OVA at all, but goddamn the mechanical design is top notch. Were there any other designers than Kobayashi? Also; someone here once said that Jintetsu was designed by Ken Ishikawa, how true is this?

Ishikawa's listed as Guest Mecha designer for the second Ginrei OVA, I was under the impression he did JinTetsu 82 and both forms of Ginrei Robo.

It's 3 episodes at 25 minutes each, or so.

As for content, the first two are comedy episodes, and the third is a more serious story set before the events of GR OVA's first episode.

When will someone translate Suikoden? Been reading through every translated Yokoyama works and this is the one with the most GR characters.

It seems odd that Sangokushi, a 60 volume manga, was fully translated while Suikoden was not.
>>
>>15765979
Sangokushi's always been the more popular representative of Chinese literature.
>>
>>15765979
There is an official French version, if that helps.

That being said, I have no doubt that Happy and HnG will take it on eventually (especially since HnG's main frontrunner SystematicChaos is a Yokoyama nut), although Hox isn't out of the question, since they were bold enough to do Sangokushi.
