It's not the first Rider of a new era. He's the tenth Rider following Decade. The Rider after him will be the first Rider of a third decade.

Celebrating anniversaries is popular in Japan, just look at all these recent anniversaries with fancy logos japanese stuff has been getting. Decade is popular in Japan. Toei is gonna pull trigger on that if only as a major marketing opportunity to bring a lot of public attention to Kamen Rider if not because they like celebrating things (they do).

Next Rider is undoubtedly the another anniversary series, except fullfledged instead of a gap filler while Kamen Rider's yearly debut gets pushed back.

The Rider after Build is the big 2 0. The next decade. Toei is going to make a big deal about that. They may not tie it into Decade in terms of narrative, but they will compare the status and importance of both.

I don't know if and when the current emperor will step down, but I doubt this exchange will be of much importance. Besides, even if Japanese law changes to alllow him to leave his throne, he won't leave until 2019 the earliest. The 20th season will start in 2018.

Toei will probably do what they did to RX and the 90s movies and consider the 20th Rider a Hesei Rider who is a living, celebratory monument to the last ten years of Hesei. The Rider after him, the 21st, will be the first proper Rider of the era, with his show airing entirely with in the new era.

You know, thinking it over, Close is like an answer to Accel's limitations. Actually, Build seems like it is intentionally trying to do W all over again, but more on that later.

Accel also worked on using only one super power compared to W's two. However, Accel only ever had the Accel Memory and its upgrades. He had that lesser Engine Memory and Stag memory for his toy phone, but that's it.

Close on the other hand, seems to be open to using a bunch of select powers by themselves. Given the recent trend of having Riders being able to swap toys, Close will very well get more forms. He's a better Accel who's powers are more friendly with the play pattern of the toys. You could give him motorcycle powers, but that won't stop him from using other powers.

In a way, you can see the same contrast between Build and W. W certainly didn't take advantage of all the Gaia Memories they made toys of, which is both odd and a shame since W's form changing is mostly color swaps. Build does a lot more with the Bottles we've seen, which already outclasses W's versatility before the show even starts. Build's got a lot more flair to his two halves as well. It's like a tenured artist redoing a picture or design they made in high school.

Perhaps, Build is Toei's desire to go back and redo an old idea from the decade before the decade ends? A poetic note to end on before the [Gokaiger + Decade = This shit] season starts after Build.

It was big on comedy and Japan tends to like that, especially after the drama in the previous few Rider shows had been fucking awful.

Another big part of the popularity is that all of the Imagins are voiced by well-known and popular voice actors, and the fact that they were voice-only meant Toei could keep bringing them back again and again much more easily and much more cheaply than actors, which also meant they could crank out films on the cheap. It wasn't until the Movie Wars films that they started getting Rider actors to return to their roles on a regular basis.

What really carried Den-O was that both the main actor and the Imagins just were a big hit at the time.

In ratings, it was actually a drop from Kabuto. And toy-sales, although a recovery from three years of low sales, still didn't hit Faiz's peak. However, even a talk-show with the Imagin's VAs during Den-O's peak sold 40k DVDs, which is more than double the numbers for a usual good performing Rider movie. The numbers were just really large in this front.

Those numbers saw a big drop by the time of Chou Den-O & Decade though, but only to standard rider numbers. The Den-O Trilogy was basically a last attempt to make some money out of the Den-O fever, but by then it didn't work, with the Trilogy selling badly even for Rider movies, which is why they were the last Den-O solo movies.

Toei is the one that started the whole "Kamen Riders are only Riders if they fight for Justice!" in the first place. The original manga had a chapter called "13 Kamen Riders" due counting the Shocker Riders. Even the original series itself also called the Shocker Riders by "Kamen Rider". It was only afterwards they decided that "Kamen Rider" could only be used for heroes (which resulted in some really stupid stuff like some classifications that equaled the Shocker Riders with random monsters that had mimicry powers and at some point mimicked other Showa Riders, like in Amazon and X).

There will be three in the show at least, nevermind the summer movie Rider.

Too early to say what will become of NightRouge and BloodStalk. We have already had a couple of villains who transform with gimmick toys and/or devices who have never become Riders. Knowing the trend, we will get a Spider-based villain who transforms the same way somewhere down the line. Ultimately, we will have to see.

These villains are prime V-Cinema Riders, at least. Though, V-Cinemas only happen when a show is open and popular enough to write one up for.

I think it'd be better if they keep the idea of Wataru's ascension to royalty over the span of the show but most of the plot is more just intrigue and interference from the various tribes without any of the romantic triangles.
