Why do people keep whining about Katoki's redraws? He does a far better job than the rest of Bandai.
>>
>>15685680
I think both have their appeal, I just want to know what they were thinking on the HG when they made the crotch. The one on the left is how it's supposed to be: a recessed cannon. No idea what's going on with the one on the right.
>>
>>15686058

the line drawing KINDA can look like the blue bit is up in the corner instead of how it is on the left, but i don't think that was what was intended. i'm kinda baffled by the crotch-thingy difference myself, but i still like it off-center, it's a neat weird little detail
>>
>>15686058
it's not a cannon, it's a thruster.
But the right interpretation is absolute fucking retarded
>>
Which is his? I kinda like the right one more.

Hey, you're right! I checked a couple sites and they definitely don't list any sort of cannon as fixed armament. Good catch!

Pic related, as it's the original lineart and why they thought it went there, even though every other source has it recessed.
>>
>>15686070
The Right one is correct because it's not a thruster, it's a fuel port.
>>
>>15686082
You can even see in the lineart that it's not a thruster and not supposed to be recessed. Literally all of the other thrusters have shading to show they're recessed but the crotch fuel port clearly doesn't have any shading and it's just a port in the corner.
>>
>>15686108
Is that true? I have to admit that looks more appropriate if that is the case... But you can't blame Katoki for trying to make it look accurate to the original design.
>>
They look about even, but I think the right one looks more functional since it looks like the waist and hips have more play room and mobility.
>>
>>15686117
No, Katoki turned it into something completely different because he's a retard. This is the original lineart upscaled using waifu. You can see the cutaway hole where the port goes in on the crotchpiece.
>>
>>15685680
>Katoki upscales thighs and legs
>somehow better than the rest of Bandai

Yet that faggot has 1/1 statue of himself being built.
>>
>>15685680
I like the HG on the right better. Looks meaner and got the fuel port right as other anons have already mentioned.
>>
>>15685680

Sometimes they end up awesome like the Barzam, ZZ Gundam, etc. Other times he totally shits over the character of the original design, like how he "unifies" everything for the Unicornverse.

Wait, holy shit you're right. That yellow border surrounding the red plate continues around the blue port. To this day I always thought it was recessed.
Though, suppose if it was recessed, there would be line work conveying an inner corner there, like on the recessed portion of the knees.
>>
>>15686160
The shading along the bottom and right even indicates that the crotch is a cod piece that bulges out.
>>
>>15686132
I wonder if anyone ever told Katoki. That's gotta be kinda embarrassing for a guy who is all about mech design and details.
>>
Fuck ya'll, the Katoki version looks way better, like a Starfish. The HGUC looks like a Mk-II wearing an oversized tunic.

Are you sure you aren't referring to this one? Another Katoki design btw.
>>
>>15686211
Refined a shit. It's just another generic MS in terms of body layout.
>>
>>15685680
Katoki one is inaccurate rubbish and doesn't even use appropriate decals.
>>
>>15686359
Yeah, I think Katoki made his more recent design of the Barzam once he realized how generic he made the refined look.
>>
>>15686196
>Katoki version looks way better, like a Starfish.

Damn, you're right, it kinda does. Sasuga Katoki.

The HGUC was designed by NAOKI right?
>>
>>15686132
This. Even though the nature of Barzam's crotch has been a mystery for years and subject of discussion for many, if you looked closely, you can clearly see that it's not a recessed cavity but a flat panel with some kind of port/sensor in one of the corners.

This is easy to mix, of course, so even official art of Barzam variation draw it as a cannon/recessed thruster occasionally, which fuels the discussioneven more.

As of now, the panel+port design is technically official, but it's also very common to see it drawn as a mega partical cannon or thruster.

tldr:Barzam's crotch is a quantum mystery that only collapse into a cannon or panel when someone decide it's one thing or the other.

That begs the question as to why the recessed version is even included.

Probably because sommany people interpreted the Barzam's crotch as a thruster that Bandai just gave them the option to choose it if they wanted.

Or maybe there are different Barzam configurations that feature either crotch. Wouldn't be the first barely tangible variation between two nearly identical MS. It's only a matter of time before we get an RGM-79 gunpla that lets the builder choose between front skirt armors with two or three segments.

>>15687779
I don't buy this "fuel port" shit, what other Mobile Suit has ever had a goddamn fuel port?

All of them, but they usually go under the skirt armor or the backpack. The robogina...is a new one.

>Why do people keep whining about Katoki's redraws?

First thing to acknowledge is that most people generally like the redesigns. It's really only a few vocal otaku that like to cry about them. Secondly, it's not so much that Katoki did the redesigns as much as the subject was redesigned to begin with. In other words, it looks different from the way it looked in its original appearance on the TV show therefore it is bad. We see this every time there's a new RX-78 Gunpla model. Even Katoki's redesigns of his originals like Sinanju get shat upon by angry neckbeards.
>>
>>15688984
>most people generally like the redesigns.

Speak for yourself, shit eater.
>>
>>15688991
There are entire vKa lines, in both model kit and figure form. The man is so popular he got to redesign everything in Endless Waltz and Unicorn. Wing Zero vEW to this day is still one of the most popular Gundam designs in existence.

So yes, I would say that most people generally like the redesigns.
>>
>>15689353
>So yes, I would say that most people generally like the redesigns.

So, does that mean Gundam SEED is the greatest Gundam ever?

I mean, it's got more kits than any other line and is constantly ranked by anime fans in Japan as #1 Gundam series.

That means it's the best. If your brain is full of shit.

Which I guess it does.
>>
>>15688710
The manual specifically calls it a fuel port
>>
>>15687740
>The HGUC was designed by NAOKI right?

I don't know officially. But I'd put money on it
>>
>>15689378
>All data points to most people generally liking a thing.
>WHAT ARE YOU SAYING THAT IT'S THE BEST THING EVER?!?!?!?

Keep on moving those goalposts.
>>
>>15689378
Putting aside the odd leap in logic you're making here from "do people like this thing" to "is this thing objectively good",

>I mean, it's got more kits than any other line

This isn't true. 0079 far and away beats any other Gundam series on this front.

>is constantly ranked by anime fans in Japan as #1 Gundam series.

This isn't true either, you're thinking of how Kira and Lacus are popular.
>>
>>15685680
Left one looks so much better with that matte finish. I dont understand why Bandai doesnt put that finish on their model kits.
>>
>>15690537
Because that would fuck over painters.
>>

But isn't that what the Barzam is supposed to be? Wasn't it built around the Mk-II skeleton? I've heard that it is, but it never really looked like it.

I like most of Katoki's designs.

To argue the point, Katoki wouldn't be one of the biggest names in sci-fi mecha designs if he was as terrible as you are implying.

l>ike how he "unifies" everything for the Unicornverse.

go on. i sure hope you aren't crying about what i've seen in the mechanics artbooks, because all that shit makes sense with feddie grunts being similar in their handful of ways because of frame variations and whatnot part of their ' family tree' so to speak, so of course there'd be similar looking styles.

one gripe i do have is unicorn's feet, noticably longer in both modes and in ntd mode, much more prominent faggotshit high heel styled, but at least that's only captured in the artwork and nothing more, the cg and 2d versions in the show, the models, any depiction in any games, all are not like that fortunately.

I really don't know why it has to be all or nothing.

I generally like Katoki. Sometimes he nails it, sometimes he sort of messes with the spirit of the original design. He's not perfect, nobody is.
>>
>>15691823
Barzam's been a meme in moonland and on here for a very long time.
Plus it's a nonstandard design based on the Mk-II, which is cool.
>>
>>15688710

Literally every mobile suit save for maybe the Turns have them. They're machines, they have to be refueled.
>>
>>15694534
or the machines with original solar furnaces.

Amphibious might not need it either, since they've got propellers instead of rockets.
