Group Gundam is pretty great.
Getter Armageddon has some great visuals, and is basically proto TTGL.
If you haven't seen Gun/Diebuster I'd probably watch gunbuster first, wash your mouth out and wait a week, then watch diebuster.

Should be good enough for starters and it's basically as "entry-level" as it gets.
Though, having seen GaoGaiGar, you'd most likely easily do with anything suggested to you.
