Do fanboys really think that's the only reason why some people don't give a rat's ass about their favourite show? Stop using it as a reason to justify your like or dislike of a show.
Take TTGL for example. The fans overhyped it to hell back then, but after watching it once, I never looked back on it, and the only reason it's on my mind recently is because people would post it all the time on other boards. (10th anniversary etc) There are many things I didn't like about TTGL which I won't extrapolate here, but if people want to have their pie, I really don't care. Whatever floats your boat.
It's the same shit with Evangelion. It's funny how the fans keep reminding us about how Evangelion is so popular and influential, and yet, I never hear people talk about it in anime normie circles.
But it doesn't begin and end with TTGL and Evangelion. There are shows I don't give a shit about besides those two like Gunbuster, Code Geass and Astroganger.

The fights were terrible, and this is one of the reasons I cannot like TTGL.
The music wasn't my cup of tea, but really, the fights were objectively bad.

I personally like Gurren Lagann and think it's legitimately a good show, but I completely understand a lot of the complaints thrown its way.

Literally no one thinks Astroganger is good, Anon. People just mention it because it was the first color mecha anime so it has historical value. Either that or in a "so bad it's good" fashion like Knack's most infamous anime, Chargeman Ken.

At this point, I think that shitting on TTGL has become such a meme that I can't help but think that people do indeed shit on it just because it's popular. It's a mostly innocuous mid 2000s show. Nothing spectacular, no, but nowhere near the level of shows that are actually legitimately bad, such as most of the mecha shows made by Bones. TTGL gets far more attention than it deserves in this regard, which I believe is a direct reaction to its popularity.
