Anyone can see that they're gonna change a lot with this.
Gainax doesn't seem to be involved at all, and so far the PV hasn't shown much promise.
Even the female character they've shown looks worrying to me.
You can obviously tell the character designer is too hard to pull off the "wacky" elements of the original, so he came up with the stupid cat headphones on a generic normal school girl design.

In the original FLCL none of the main characters stood out too much outside of Canti and Haruko, Canti even tried to look somewhat normal with the bomber jacket and Haruko had a few times where she changed into more normal attire.
Conversely the MC shown in the PV was given cat earphones with no purpose other than to look quirky or some shit like that.

I love FLCL but I thought everyone always said that what made the original great was that it was just a side project with a kind of punk rock vibe. Intentionally trying to capture the magic again just feels too deliberate and it will probably be shit.

To be honest, I only recently found out about this.

When FLCL first came out, I was in my early teens. I saw it way back when, the combination of crazy animation, sex-themed gags, and the pillows's music had a lasting effect on me but I honestly never "went back."

So, like I said, I found out about an FLCL sequel very recently and decided to watch it again.

Now that I'm 8,473 years of age and have achieved the pinnacle of mankind's evolution by reaching the true apex only obtained through unlocking the Solomon Gate of Humanity's Existence....

I have to say that I still enjoyed it. In fact, I'd say I got more of a kick out of it as an adult than I did as a young teen because there were honestly a loooooooooot of things that went over my head.

If you saw it when you were younger and haven't gone back since, check it out.

If you put it off because of its association with Gainax, check it out.

FLCL is a great piece of anime and I think everyone can walk away enjoying one aspect of its overall direction and narrative.

With the obligatory "I have to pretend to be a dad on an internet imageboard" behavior out of the way, I have to say that the trailer looks nice.

I will say it's nice to hear the pillows again.

Speaking for myself, the last time I listened to anything by them was probably back when Pied Piper came out.

It's not even like it's a new thing. They've been around for at least a few years at this point. That's not to say it isn't completely stupid that the MC is wearing them, but maybe ditching them will be part of her character growth I hope. It won't be as good as the original, but maybe it won't be shit. It does worry me that they've already confirmed 3 and are basically setting up 2 and 3 to air back to back.

Is that dome faced robot the protagonist robot, akin to this show's Kanti? I hope not... it looks so typical and pedestrian for an anime mecha, not at all what Kanti represented.

I kinda of liked that tired, worn down look a lot of the characters in the original show had. It fit the tone of the series perfectly.
The character models in this look to be very... regular.
Also getting some serious 'soft reboot' vibes akin to The Force Awakens, which worries me quite a lot.

More likely an inspiration. The product doesn't have the exact same appearance, unless there's a new Axent that I'm not aware of with triangles in its ears instead of two sets of fairly obvious speakers. Axent's went quite viral around when they were announced for whatever reason.

It may be because I was a teenager myself when I saw FLCL, but no other coming-of-age anime has ever resonated as much with me. I know it's kind of madcap and almost incomprehensible, but at the same time once I boiled down what Naota was going through to its very basic qualities, I related to him a lot. I feel like if I were to go back and watch it today, it wouldn't feel the same.
