Starship Troopers is Starship Troopers. They made the OVA to commemorate author's passing and to show due respect to the book that had so much influence on the genre.

But the book is solitary, the story is closed and the anime done. What more could you possibly ask for?

Heinlen died in March, the show came out in October and ended in December of the same year.

Taking Daicon into account, they were most likely pushing to get a Starship Troopers movie done and the moment he passed away, they got a green light.

Take it or leave it, it's not like it's that important. I stick with it because it gives that little more personality to the old and pretty enjoyable, if slightly rushed (animation-wise) OVA.
