How unique was the ZOIDS series, compared to other Japanese Big-Stompy-Robot series?
The only thing I can think of is that it featured giant robot animals instead of people in suits.
>>
>>15654096
Why does it matter?
>>
>>15654118
Just something to talk about.
>>
>>15654096
It has a vaguely post-apocalyptic setting, which is relatively rare, I guess
Other than that, it's an extremely by the numbers battle shounen complete with horribly retarded hair, mascot critters, amnesia and an edgy guy who joins the heroes later.
>>
>>15654143
That's something I picked up when I looked back on the series, years later.
That Post-Apocalyptic setting might work more, if there were possibly more Wild-Zoids around, being a problem.

>The only thing I can think of is that it featured giant robot animals instead of people in suits.

Because that's basically the only thing.
>>
I used to watch this at 6:00 in the morning before school when I was a child. I think it was on Toonamis morning show.
>>
>>15654177
It was on Cartoon Network for a wHile.
>>
>>15654143
The hair's fine.
>>
I remember the mold kits sold in the west were quite expensive.
>>
>>15654177
Me too. One of the motivating things to get me out of bed and ready for school.

Not that unique since there are few older shows that had animal-like mecha.

The difference with Zoids is that they really ran with the animal idea and made a story with several different designs based on animals as opposed to most other shows where there was basically just the handful that was used by the main cast.

Zoids thread?

Berserk Fury CLAIMED!
>>
>>15654504
You see, I liked that. There were wild, sentient Zoids which honestly I don't see in any other Robot media. The Robots were alive, and with the exception of like, a few Gundam, most didn't have their own sense of mind.

you too
>>
>>15654510
Some of them were. Very few of them were sentient.
>>
>>15654096
The anime went the stereotypical route. The battle story that you had to compile the kits and the ps1/ps2 game for basically predated the anime and removed the shounen aspect from it. The later anime and later games got even more shounen.
>>
>>15654096
I think it's the last /m/ series to get above the 50s in terms of episode count, which is neat I guess.
>>
The lore for the model kits is pretty interesting, and how it gives you pieces information for a complete timeline, dating when certain zoids saw use and what was going on with the conflict at the time.
>>
>>15656358
Only if you don't count Tetsujin 28 Gao
>>
>>15656737
Aren't those mini-episodes?
>>
>>15657104
Yeah, but you didn't specify. For something more orthodox, Transformers Prime got 65 episodes
>>
>>15657134
That's fair. If mini-episodes are also counted then I'm pretty sure Mazinger Zip also outdid Zoids.

So not quite the last, but one of the last.
>>
i know nothing of it, but man does this gunner kitter look cool
>>
>>15654143
>and an edgy guy who joins the heroes later.
This never happened unless you think Raven joining Van at the last second at the very end is joining the heroes.

And I'll slap your shit if you're trying to imply Irvine is edgy

On the bright side, they did get past the leads' childhood.
>>
>>15654096
Thinking of watching Zoids but I don't know where to start. I've had Genesis on my computer for a while, but I hear mixed things about it. Since it's set in its own universe, is it a good starting point?
>>
>>15657378
Start from Chaotic Century, I dunno about the CG but the anime aged pretty well from what I remember. If you're more a fan of shounen tournament types you can start at New Century. Otherwise you can start wherever you want.

I wish to see more of the Bio Zoids, underrated designs
>>
As a series both Chaotic and new Century are still good.

Chaotic is a good sci fi mecha show, and New is a nice tournament show with some pretty hype moments. One of the things I'm most impressed with in hindsight is the fact that I never questioned WHY both of them always took place in Deserts for most of their fights. The integration of the setting they chose for the sake of making the CGI easier to use was flawless
>>
>>15661938
>underrated designs

They were one of the bigger problems Genesis had though, unfortunately. That might have been helped had they used more of the designs, but as it stands, the total lack of enemy variety is a standout thing there.
>>
>>15654148
Also the framerate was higher than regular 3d mecha wich is animated like at 8fps, it made the fights more fluid and has made me come to dislike recent 3d animation combined with 2d, which never bothered to git gud with 3d.
>>
>>15661951
I do got to admit that Zoids is practically the only series of its era to have CG models that still kinda hold up today. Certainly looks better than anything Gonzo put out. At the same time, though, the animation wasn't very good
>>
>>15662746
I disagree anon, the 3d parts are better than the motion blur trashfire we usually get nowadays, the traditional animation is average though
>>
>>15657238
Fucking best frame parts for the Liger. Glorious dakka.
>>
>>15662763
In place of today's motion blur, you had the contact covering and bad particle effects of the 90s. The lasers in Zoids were really bad, they seemed about as effective as lasers usually are against the Starship Enterprise
>>
>>15654096
ZOIDS is average at best.
>>
>>15665385
Wrong.
