Well it's not like there aren't things that don't veer heavily towards one aspect or the other. That's part of why 7 is my favorite. The show barely has any romance at all, and would much rather show you Basara making love to his guitar. Plus has a few songs and a throwaway plot about test piloting, but is mostly about the relationships between three terrible people.
It's a good series for those who like to pick their poison

7 still has relationship drama, it happens to be of the "I can't choose between these two guys" variety and since the linchpin character is a 14 year old girl and the two guys are in their 20s at the very least, barely anything romantic happens.

besides, OP won't like 7 anyway since it's very heavy on the music and singing, it's vital to the story and characters, as well as being supernatural and damn near magical

It's been about 20 years, they still haven't progressed any further? Isn't the VF-25 supposed to be on par with the 19 and 22, except that it has better support for stuff like super and armor packs?

I know for Frontier Kawamori designed the VF-25 rather than go with the VF-19 because in his mind the 19 was considered a "hero unit" since it was associated with Isamu and Basara, but I guess the VF-25 will never be adopted for mass production since it's also now a "hero unit" and is technically just as capable if not more than the VF-19?

Come on, I just want to see something other than the VF-17 and 171 for a change. Even seeing a colony fleet still fielding VF-11 units or maybe some other economy model like VF-3000, 5000, or something newer based on the same lines.

Got around to watching the original Macross. It's super autistic. That's not how things work, that's not how you communicate as well as plot convenience for convenience sake. But apart from that I enjoyed, to me it was a campy action sci-fi space opera that ticked a bunch of random boxes. I should not have enjoyed it that much but I do.

Gundam's been doing it for at least 15 years, although it didn't really become official until recently.

Personally I'd like to see Macross tackle a genre like hip-hop, or trance.
A story about an upcoming rapper/mercenary trying to shill his mixtape across the galaxy would be fun.

Macross will always be full of drama and singing. The good news is that, after SDF, the singing gets a lot better. Minmays songs are largely forgettable at best, or grating at worst. Later shows put more effort and budget into their songs, so you are generally happy to hear them (the exception being the more repetitive section of M7 where you are like "If you sing Planet Dance ONE MORE FUCKING TIME...").

What defines Macross for me is starting most shows off with fairly grounded scifi and then, over the course of that series, introducing absurd bullshit a little at a time until it hits a critical mass. By the time you get to a rockstar throwing himself out of his cockpit with a guitar in order to sing into a black hole for the fate of the galaxy, you are like "In context, this makes perfect sense".

And I love that.

I completely agree. The appeal of Macross is the awesome combo of catchy pop/rock/whatever songs playing while dudes go 2fast2furious in jet fighters that transform into bipedal robots. People looking for gritty realistic military scifi are really looking at the wrong franchise.

The Macross 7 fleet was stated to be using some design based off the monkey model VF-19s they got for their grunts.

And desu, the 171 is a good VF. Just flown by bad pilots, and hardware-wise, they could just push the 171EX out and have it being Frontier selling the data and shit they made for the 171EX to the other fleets/colonies for a quick buck.

It's numerous as all hell and it's by and large all formulaic garbage. Macross stands apart because it is something unique.
There's hundreds of Gundam clones, but there is only one Macross.
