Sure, it does look silly, but at the same time, their fight was all over that town. Shiro had zero spatial awareness, and the guntanks aren't crashing through buildings; Norris could easily have worked Shiro around wherever he wanted to corner the Guntanks. That was, after all, his real objective the entire time.

What are they supposed to do exactly? Their only purpose in life is medium and long-range artillery bombardment. The peashooters on their arms are for destroying tanks and aircraft. The Guntank could get away with fighting mobile suits because plot armor, but even it was kind of shit at it, which is why they abandoned it entirely later on.

All the MP Guntanks would achieve if they went off half-cocked trying to attack Norris is a quicker death. Shit, they might even get the people that were ordered to keep them alive killed doing that shit. Even if they tried to take a shot at the Gouf Custom, he'd probably dodge the shot anyways. Though admittedly it would be a huge improvement to that fight scene, because it would likely result in them accidentally hitting the Ez8 instead, thus ridding us of Shitro.

It's an MP Guntank, Anon, not an M10 or a jet. It can move around really loudly and slowly and fire cannon shells to a long range, and maaaaaaybe shoot down a couple planes. That's it. That's the range of its capabilities.

You don't protect a target by telling it to run around hoping it doesn't die, you protect a target by putting it in a known and defensible position and defending it from attack. MP Guntanks moving around the city and pulling their defenders with it makes defending them an even bigger chore than it already was. Shit, this in and of itself is half the reason people hate escort missions.

The MP Guntanks did exactly what they should have done in that situation, which was stay put in a more consolidated area so that their defenders could attempt to defend them. Even ignoring the logistical issues of three Gundams trying to protect three MP Guntanks doing who the fuck knows what based on your ridiculously vague suggestions, they'd be insubordinate for doing so. The MP Guntanks weren't ordered to retreat out of the city, they were ordered to shell the Zeon base. The Gundam[G]s were expected to be capable of handling their defense.

As for the Gouf Custom having the upper hand, that's just complete bullshit. The Gouf Custom was at a significant disadvantage the entire time, and Norris succeeded through his skills and expertise. That doesn't put him at any less of a disadvantage though, because taking a single machine up against three veteran mobile suits with higher performance specs and armor is a disadvantage. Period.

Even if the MP Guntanks were to try and retreat in column outside of the city, it still puts them at a disadvantage because it clearly signals their position and makes it much easier to predict their movements. It also makes it harder for their Gundam[G]s to protect them, because as I said before, they now have to both follow them while also scanning their surroundings for incoming enemy attacks. Any advantages they gain from a stationary defensive position are lost, which is why they didn't do that. It would be fucking stupid to try and do that.

If you want to bitch about the fight, bitch instead about how shit Shiro's team was. That's something worth complaining about, rather than this nonsense.

The consensus among most people for years was that it was great with dissent mostly shut down or non-existent. It was only after years of that that that the voices saying it wasn't great became more accepted or vocal, which is in no way sudden.

The battle is the culmination of the 08th MS Team as a team, it should be their chance to shine and show how a team can overcome a bigger obstacle; it isn't. They are completely overwhelmed by Norris, and not even because he's so much better than them, but mostly because any team work or skill they had developed over the course of the story is thrown out the window and they stand around gawping at how awesome Norris is apparently being so as to make it look more impressive when the team aspect is completely abandoned at the end of the fight and it comes down to Shiro versus Norris. Which would be fine I suppose, if Shiro himself were particularly impressive and the fight existed to show his character and skill off. It doesn't do that either though, since when it does come down to him versus Norris, Norris himself suddenly becomes rather tame as an opponent and the fight is over in a few seconds with barely any skill on either's part. The fight fails as a show of the team coming together and as a showcase of individual skill.

Even a lot of the stuff to make Norris look great is kind of silly, since besides the aforementioned part where Sanders approaches Norris with no weapons there's things like everyone standing around looking at the Gouf Custom while it surveys the battlefield for several seconds and only Karen firing a single shot from a machine gun at him. A shot so lazy he can basically just lean out of the way of it. She doesn't even follow up with a second shot despite him standing around for another few seconds after dodging and none of them yet being overwhelmed by how great Norris apparently is. Or Shiro, someone who starts the show using a Ball to beat a custom Zaku partially by aiming a winch precisely under stressful circumstances freaks out that Norris is better than expected and empties several guns at once while firing with his eyes closed, so that while the shots hit everywhere around Norris, not one of them actually hits the guy standing almost right in front of him. Or Shiro being amazed at the Gouf lifting some masonry off itself and getting back up after a bit of overpass is partially dropped on it; so amazed he can't even fire at it while Norris speaks about how he's right to cower in fear at facing someone who really knows how to use a mobile suit. The fight is almost all spectacle and no substance.

The problem is that this is more the norm than otherwise, not just in Gundam, but in a significant amount of media. People make fights that look cool, and generally don't care about whether or not what's happening actually makes any sense.

Western media depicting modern fighting usually only gets a pass on this because what happens in real life miraculously lines up with what looks cool. Except if vehicles are involved, of course.

He didn't want to kill Shiro anyways. Norris was also left for dead, and the only way he was getting off that battlefield was as a POW or a corpse. There's no way he'd choose the former. That's the reason why Aina didn't want him to sally out at all, because she knew if he did he wouldn't be coming back.

They show all this shit pretty clearly, but decades later people still come around here confused about Norris Packard's intentions. Apparently they needed a monologue where he clearly expresses his intentions, because all of the other dialogue in those episodes was somehow not enough.
