I guess I just really don't see the problem with mustache looking decorations on mecha.
I don't even think that's the most unusual part of Turn A's design. Things like the hollow missile silo torso and leg boosters seem more absurd. The mustache is just a different interpretation of the V-fin.

The only thing I dislike about the Turn A is that the placement of the mustache being so low on the face, makes the chin guard found on most Gundams appear to be a big red nose. If that weren't there I would have no issues.

This is also a series where armor generally means nothing to melee weapons, at least if it's not a shield, so the placement of your cockpit means nothing for protection to melee weapons because one hit will get it regardless.
